Central Truth

History has a way of repeating itself. Now is our time to repent before the proverbial locusts strip us bare, leaving us with nothing.

Key Verse | Joel 1:13–14

Gird yourselves with sackcloth
And lament, O priests;
Wail, O ministers of the altar!
Come, spend the night in sackcloth
O ministers of my God,
For the grain offering and the drink offering
Are withheld from the house of your God.
Consecrate a fast,
Proclaim a solemn assembly;
Gather the elders
And all the inhabitants of the land
To the house of the LORD your God,
And cry out to the LORD.
(Joel 1:13-14)

Joel 1

The word of the LORD that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel:

An Invasion of Locusts

Hear this, you elders;
    give ear, all inhabitants of the land!
Has such a thing happened in your days,
    or in the days of your fathers?
Tell your children of it,
    and let your children tell their children,
    and their children to another generation.

What the cutting locust left,
    the swarming locust has eaten.
What the swarming locust left,
    the hopping locust has eaten,
and what the hopping locust left,
    the destroying locust has eaten.

Awake, you drunkards, and weep,
    and wail, all you drinkers of wine,
because of the sweet wine,
    for it is cut off from your mouth.
For a nation has come up against my land,
    powerful and beyond number;
its teeth are lions' teeth,
    and it has the fangs of a lioness.
It has laid waste my vine
    and splintered my fig tree;
it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down;
    their branches are made white.

Lament like a virgin 1 1:8 Or young woman wearing sackcloth
    for the bridegroom of her youth.
The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off
    from the house of the LORD.
The priests mourn,
    the ministers of the LORD.
10  The fields are destroyed,
    the ground mourns,
because the grain is destroyed,
    the wine dries up,
    the oil languishes.

11  Be ashamed, 2 1:11 The Hebrew words for dry up and be ashamed in verses 1012, 17 sound alike O tillers of the soil;
    wail, O vinedressers,
for the wheat and the barley,
    because the harvest of the field has perished.
12  The vine dries up;
    the fig tree languishes.
Pomegranate, palm, and apple,
    all the trees of the field are dried up,
and gladness dries up
    from the children of man.

A Call to Repentance

13  Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests;
    wail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, pass the night in sackcloth,
    O ministers of my God!
Because grain offering and drink offering
    are withheld from the house of your God.

14  Consecrate a fast;
    call a solemn assembly.
Gather the elders
    and all the inhabitants of the land
to the house of the LORD your God,
    and cry out to the LORD.

15  Alas for the day!
For the day of the LORD is near,
    and as destruction from the Almighty 3 1:15 Destruction sounds like the Hebrew for Almighty it comes.
16  Is not the food cut off
    before our eyes,
joy and gladness
    from the house of our God?

17  The seed shrivels under the clods; 4 1:17 The meaning of the Hebrew line is uncertain
    the storehouses are desolate;
the granaries are torn down
    because the grain has dried up.
18  How the beasts groan!
    The herds of cattle are perplexed
because there is no pasture for them;
    even the flocks of sheep suffer. 5 1:18 Or are made desolate

19  To you, O LORD, I call.
For fire has devoured
    the pastures of the wilderness,
and flame has burned
    all the trees of the field.
20  Even the beasts of the field pant for you
    because the water brooks are dried up,
and fire has devoured
    the pastures of the wilderness.

Dive Deeper | Joel 1

I have long been fascinated with how God works in the Old Testament. With all the prophets, whether they are predicting judgment against Israel, Judah, or their neighboring land, the theme is the same. The Lord gives the people multiple chances to repent, followed by execution of His judgment for disobedience.

With Judah, God sent warning after warning. The Lord used prophets, then plagues, and finally destruction and exile. The passage discusses the destruction of the crops and all the greenery in Judah by locusts. The vines were left bare. The storehouses were left empty. There was nothing left to offer as sacrifices to the Lord. No wine for the drink offering; no grain for the grain offering; the destruction was complete.

During the plagues in Egypt before the Exodus, the Lord sent several plagues, each of increasing torment. The locusts were plague eight of ten. Joel is prophesying that the locusts faced by the people of Judah are a warning of further torment to come if the people do not repent and return to the Lord. As we know, the people did repent for a while but then turned back to their evil ways, causing Judah to experience a period of exile.

I cannot help but draw parallels to America today. In my humble opinion, our country is far from the Lord; we have turned to our evil ways. We worship other gods named Materialism, Wealth, Fame, and Lust. Our Savior is an afterthought, not to be discussed in most circles because it is "politically incorrect." In 2008 America had what many are calling the "Great Recession." The stock market lost 8,000 points in less than 18 months. Giant financial companies such as Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Washington Mutual disappeared seemingly overnight. Traditionally stable companies, such as GM, needed government bailouts to stay afloat. America was shaken to the core. Our financial harvests were nonexistent. Our storehouses of savings accounts and 401(k)s were decimated. We had no offerings to bring to the Lord.

Edmund Burke wrote, "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." I see America today and know: The locusts are coming.

Discussion Questions

1. Have the locusts stripped you bare? Do you have any offerings to present to the Lord?

2. Are you putting your faith in storehouses that can be destroyed by locusts?

3. Joel 1:14 calls on the people of Judah to fast and to repent for their evil acts. If you are far from the Lord, what do you need to do to repent and return to Him?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HOSEA 13–JOEL 3 (OCTOBER 3-7)

Read Joel 1–2:13.

What is the story that Joel wants the people to pass down to their children?

Why is this an important story? (Answer: God wants us to know that destruction will happen at the end of time, just like it did in Joel's time with the locusts. It is important for us to be secure in our hearts of who God is to us, just like it was important for Israel to know who God was to them.)

What or who do you put your confidence in, other than God? (Help your kids think about different things: friendships, good grades, a sports team, mom and dad, no spankings, etc.)

How might those things/people fail you?

Reread Joel 2:12-13.

The Israelites had put their confidence in things besides God. Where does God want us to turn? Why is God who we need to confidently believe in with our hearts?

Get a piece of red paper. Tear out a heart. (Remember it is not about being perfect, it is about our hearts trusting God.) On one side, write all the things that could create a false sense of confidence/security (like a life without locusts). On the other side, write Joel 2:32a.
