Central Truth

Faithfulness is more than words. It involves heart and action.

Key Verse | Hosea 4:1

"Listen to the word of the LORD, O sons of Israel,
For the LORD has a case against the inhabitants of the land,
Because there is no faithfulness or kindness
Or knowledge of God in the land."
(Hosea 4:1)

Hosea 4

The LORD Accuses Israel

Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,
    for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
    and no knowledge of God in the land;
there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
    they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Therefore the land mourns,
    and all who dwell in it languish,
and also the beasts of the field
    and the birds of the heavens,
    and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

Yet let no one contend,
    and let none accuse,
    for with you is my contention, O priest. 1 4:4 Or for your people are like those who contend with the priest
You shall stumble by day;
    the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;
    and I will destroy your mother.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge;
    because you have rejected knowledge,
    I reject you from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God,
    I also will forget your children.

The more they increased,
    the more they sinned against me;
    I will change their glory into shame.
They feed on the sin 2 4:8 Or sin offering of my people;
    they are greedy for their iniquity.
And it shall be like people, like priest;
    I will punish them for their ways
    and repay them for their deeds.
10  They shall eat, but not be satisfied;
    they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the LORD
    to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,
    which take away the understanding.
12  My people inquire of a piece of wood,
    and their walking staff gives them oracles.
For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,
    and they have left their God to play the whore.
13  They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains
    and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
    because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
    and your brides commit adultery.
14  I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,
    nor your brides when they commit adultery;
for the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
    and sacrifice with cult prostitutes,
and a people without understanding shall come to ruin.

15  Though you play the whore, O Israel,
    let not Judah become guilty.
Enter not into Gilgal,
    nor go up to Beth-aven,
    and swear not, “As the LORD lives.”
16  Like a stubborn heifer,
    Israel is stubborn;
can the LORD now feed them
    like a lamb in a broad pasture?

17  Ephraim is joined to idols;
    leave him alone.
18  When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;
    their rulers 3 4:18 Hebrew shields dearly love shame.
19  A wind has wrapped them 4 4:19 Hebrew her in its wings,
    and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Dive Deeper | Hosea 4

Everyone knows someone who says one thing and does another. In fact, most of us are guilty of the same thing. Many people around me know I am a believer. Sadly, my actions don't always mirror that profession. I have a very quick tongue, and the sarcasm and insensitive words that flow out of my mouth without a second thought, at times, betray my desire to honor Christ. For example, sitting here, working on my Journey devotional in a house that is constantly moving, I just told my sister that I loved her, but I was about to punch her in the face if she didn't leave me alone. Yes, I was kidding. But then again . . . .

Hosea 4:1 talks about how there was no knowledge of the Lord in the land. (Note I didn't say religious activity.) When I compare the times of Hosea to now, not much has changed. Back then, the Israelites were busy with lots of religious activity, and yet all the while they were actively dishonoring God. Today, Dallasites and other "ites" around the world are doing the same. Our idols look different . . . but they are still out there.

Our country is full of many who say they are Christians and who may even "religiously" tramp off to church on Sunday. Yet, like Gomer, they find themselves shamelessly acting like tramps too many other times. Words are cheap. We all can claim what we want (like I claim to have self-control while others who may be near me when I am writing a Journey entry might say otherwise).

Hosea is a perfect reminder for me that the Lord doesn't want me to wear a WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) bracelet while living a WWKDBMSIAM (What Would Kirby Do Because My Sister Is Annoying Me) life.

Thankfully for us, we have a God who is faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). How can we leave a love like that? Sounds a lot like what someone might have said to Gomer about leaving someone like Hosea.

"[W]hile we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). That's faithfulness.

Discussion Questions

1. Did you read Hosea 4 before you read my devotional? (See the January 3 Journey Discussion Questions http://wmcc.jointhejourney.com/log/67763 for the reason why.)

2. Are your actions matching up with your claims?

3. What does your WWKDBMSIAM bracelet say? What should it say?

4. Have you recognized God's unending faithfulness and thanked Him for it lately?

5. Who do you know that could use some encouragement today to return to their first love? Give them a call now.

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HOSEA 3-7 (SEPTEMBER 19-23)

Read Hosea 6:1-7.

ACTIVITY: Go on a scavenger hunt looking for things in your house that have been broken before, but you or your family did something to "restore" it. When you have found several items, talk about how the item was broken, how it made you feel when it was broken, and what you/your parent(s) did to help "restore" the item.

The story of all the books of the prophets in the Bible talk about the nation of Israel and their disobedience towards God. The book of Hosea is no different. One of the visual images Hosea uses is idolatry, which means a believer in God breaking his covenant/promise to love the One True God.

In the middle of this book, Hosea talks about what it would look like for Israel to repent of its disobedience and return to the Lord.

Have you ever disobeyed your parents? How did it make you feel? How did it make them feel? Do your parents still love you even when you have disobeyed and broken their trust?

Was does it look like to disobey God, to break your covenant with Him? When we disobey God, how do we restore our relationship with Him? What does it mean to repent and ask for forgiveness?

If you have never "repented" of your disobedience, follow Hosea's encouragement and return to the Lord, seeking healing from Him.
