Central Truth

As human beings, we naturally chase after sin, but we must train ourselves to seek God first and stick with Him.

Key Verse | Hosea 2:7

"She will pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them
Then she will say, 'I will go back to my first husband,
For it was better for me then than now!'"
(Hosea 2:7)

Hosea 2

Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished

1 2:1 Ch 2:3 in Hebrew Say to your brothers, “You are my people,” 2 2:1 Hebrew ammi, which means my people and to your sisters, “You have received mercy.” 3 2:1 Hebrew ruhama, which means she has received mercy

“Plead with your mother, plead—
for she is not my wife,
and I am not her husband—
that she put away her whoring from her face,
    and her adultery from between her breasts;
lest I strip her naked
and make her as in the day she was born,
and make her like a wilderness,
and make her like a parched land,
    and kill her with thirst.
Upon her children also I will have no mercy,
because they are children of whoredom.
For their mother has played the whore;
she who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’
Therefore I will hedge up her 4 2:6 Hebrew your way with thorns,
and I will build a wall against her,
so that she cannot find her paths.
She shall pursue her lovers
    but not overtake them,
and she shall seek them
    but shall not find them.
Then she shall say,
‘I will go and return to my first husband,
for it was better for me then than now.’
And she did not know
that it was I who gave her
the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and who lavished on her silver and gold,
    which they used for Baal.
Therefore I will take back
    my grain in its time,
and my wine in its season,
and I will take away my wool and my flax,
which were to cover her nakedness.
10  Now I will uncover her lewdness
in the sight of her lovers,
and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.
11  And I will put an end to all her mirth,
her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths,
    and all her appointed feasts.
12  And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
    of which she said,
‘These are my wages,
which my lovers have given me.’
I will make them a forest,
and the beasts of the field shall devour them.
13  And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals
when she burned offerings to them
and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry,
    and went after her lovers
and forgot me, declares the LORD.

The LORD's Mercy on Israel

14  Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
    and speak tenderly to her.
15  And there I will give her her vineyards
and make the Valley of Achor 5 2:15 Achor means trouble; compare Joshua 7:26 a door of hope.
And there she shall answer as in the days of her youth,
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.

16 And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18 And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish 6 2:18 Hebrew break the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. 19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the LORD.

21  And in that day I will answer, declares the LORD,
    I will answer the heavens,
and they shall answer the earth,
22  and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and they shall answer Jezreel, 7 2:22 Jezreel means God will sow
23      and I will sow her for myself in the land.
And I will have mercy on No Mercy, 8 2:23 Hebrew Lo-ruhama
    and I will say to Not My People, 9 2:23 Hebrew Lo-ammi ‘You are my people’;
and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”

Dive Deeper | Hosea 2

Hosea 2 talks about adultery, but I see it as a message about the temptation of sin as a whole. When we sin, we should recognize that sin and confess it. God is always there to restore us after we've fallen.

As human beings, we live by our emotions, what our body wants and what the world tells us in our heads that we need. In the beginning, Adam and Eve first fell into sin by temptation. Satan told them if they ate the fruit, they would have wisdom and knowledge just like God. He persuaded them to think they needed this wisdom. As Christians, we should rely on the wisdom found in God's Truth, but instead we easily succumb to the world.

"[O]ur Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." (C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory) In this passage, I understand that we are offered eternity in Heaven, yet we stray from that to drink, lust, or even lie/gossip. Our standards are so low in life that we choose to follow after these worthless things rather than the greatest hope God offers us.

The deal with sin is we can't get away from it. We live in a fallen world, and we are imperfect. Once you dedicate your life to God and confess your sins, don't be discouraged. Stick to a daily life with Him, even when you fall back into sin. Working towards a deeper relationship with God will help you fight the constant battle of temptation. God always has our backs in life.

In Revelation 3:16, He tells us, "So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth." A relationship works both ways, we have to do our part and not constantly choose temptation through comfort.

Discussion Questions

1. Are you living a lukewarm life?

2. Have you been studying God's Word throughout the week?

3. What does having a relationship with God look like to you?

4. Are you being too easily pleased with what the world offers? What can you do about it?
