Central Truth

Don't put your trust in yourself or your "empire," but put your trust in the Lord.

Key Verse | Ezekiel 31:10–11

"Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, 'Because it is high in stature and has set its top among the clouds, and its heart is haughty in its loftiness, therefore I will give it into the hand of a despot of the nations; he will thoroughly deal with it. According to its wickedness I have driven it away.'" (Ezekiel 31:10-11)

Ezekiel 31

Pharaoh to Be Slain

In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude:

Whom are you like in your greatness?
    Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon,
with beautiful branches and forest shade,
    and of towering height,
    its top among the clouds. 1 31:3 Or its top went through the thick boughs
The waters nourished it;
    the deep made it grow tall,
making its rivers flow
    around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
    to all the trees of the field.
So it towered high
    above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
    and its branches long
    from abundant water in its shoots.
All the birds of the heavens
    made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
    gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
    lived all great nations.
It was beautiful in its greatness,
    in the length of its branches;
for its roots went down
    to abundant waters.
The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it,
    nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
    like its branches;
no tree in the garden of God
    was its equal in beauty.
I made it beautiful
    in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of Eden envied it,
    that were in the garden of God.

10 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because it 2 31:10 Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew you towered high and set its top among the clouds, 3 31:10 Or its top through the thick boughs and its heart was proud of its height, 11 I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 Foreigners, the most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all the ravines of the land, and all the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 On its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds, 4 31:14 Or their tops through the thick boughs and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, to the world below, among the children of man, 5 31:14 Or of Adam with those who go down to the pit.

15 Thus says the Lord God: On the day the cedar 6 31:15 Hebrew it went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the world below. 17 They also went down to Sheol with it, to those who are slain by the sword; yes, those who were its arm, who lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below. You shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Dive Deeper | Ezekiel 31

Upon first glance at Ezekiel 31, I read the title "A Cedar in Lebanon." I sarcastically thought, "Oh great, a chapter about a tree in Lebanon--there should be some solid application here." However, after doing a little more research and study, I came to see that this chapter definitely does have application in our lives.

Ezekiel, per God's direction, calls the Egyptians to compare themselves to the Assyrians. The Assyrian Empire was stronger than Egypt, yet Assyria fell at the hands of the Babylonians. Ezekiel's message was meant to show Egypt that it could not trust in its own power, but should repent and trust in the Lord. The Pharaoh of Egypt did not see Egypt's powerful position as a blessing from the Lord and instead boasted in his own power and what he had accomplished. (Ezekiel 29:3) So God allowed Egypt to experience a fate similar to that of the Assyrians (Egypt was ultimately destroyed by the Babylonians in 567 B.C.).

I think I've often tried to control my life without consulting what the Lord would want me to do. I've run hard after what I thought I wanted, and, after it failed, I've asked God to help clean up the mess. This has definitely led to some pain, which then led me to ask myself, "What do I know?" and to try to rely on the Lord and not myself.

Ezekiel 31 shows us that we need to put our trust in God, not in things of this world or our own plans. A verse I've been meditating on the last few months is Proverbs 21:1 (NIV 1984), which says: "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases." This verse is my prayer: that I would trust and allow God to move me where He pleases in His time and not try to put my hand in the mix or trust in myself.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you feel secure because of worldly treasures such as money, health, family, etc.? Or do you feel security because of reliance on the Lord and His provision for your life?

2. How do you determine your next step in life? Are you constantly seeking God's will to figure out what He would have you do, or are you trying to determine your own steps and trying to work God's plan to fit your needs?

3. What is something that you can do today to take a step in faith and trust God's direction? (Tip: start a statement with "Today, I will . . . .")

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

EZEKIEL 28-32 (AUGUST 1-5)

In Ezekiel 26 and 27 Ezekiel is telling about the destruction of Tyre, a nation that had become prideful. In Ezekiel 28 he is talking specifically to the king of Tyre.

Read Ezekiel 28:1-10.

What did the king of Tyre believe about himself? Who does he think he is wiser than (see verse 3)?

Read Daniel 2:20-23.

Where did Daniel believe his wisdom came from?

Read Proverbs 2:6.

Where does wisdom come from? What happens when we start believing that we are wiser than God? What happens when we forget that all wisdom comes from God? What are things you can do to remind yourself that all wisdom comes from God? How can you protect yourself from becoming prideful?

ACTIVITY: As a family, talk about the things that you will do this week to guard against pride. Also discuss ways that you can help each other remember who is the giver of all wisdom. Make bracelets to wear for the rest of the month that will remind you that God is the giver of all wisdom . . . that HE is God, and we are not!
