Central Truth
Our feelings and emotions can lead us to unbiblical decisions and regrettable actions. How much more profitable to abide in the revealed wisdom of the One who created us, sustains us, loves us, and has preserved His Word for us as an authority in all areas of life and conduct.
“To you, O men, I call,
and my cry is to the children of man.
O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense."
(Proverbs 8:4-5)
1
Does not wisdom call?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
2
On the heights beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
3
beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
4
“To you, O men, I call,
and my cry is to the children of man.
5
O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense.
6
Hear, for I will speak noble things,
and from my lips will come what is right,
7
for my mouth will utter truth;
wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8
All the words of my mouth are righteous;
there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
9
They are all straight to him who understands,
and right to those who find knowledge.
10
Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold,
11
for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.
Wisdom, personified as a woman, positions herself strategically at the entrance to the city. She calls out passionately to all who would hear, imploring them to heed her words. Yet fools disdain her and suffer the fruit of their folly.
Wisdom must speak loudly, for the streets around her are abuzz with commerce, and the sounds of a bustling marketplace would drown out her pleas. Here, Satan prowls among the unwary, peddling counterfeit wares to those who would buy them. A dealer of deception, he promises much but delivers nothing.
Across the road, the tradesman of worldly goods beckons all to his offerings. The packaging is attractive, but the product is defective. The entire marketplace, it seems, is a bazaar of betrayal.
Wisdom is a defense against the deception of the enemy and the seduction of the world's enticements (Proverbs 4:6). It is the ability to foresee tomorrow's consequences of today's actions. Although a godly wife modeled wisdom before me, my arrogant ways continued to prevail. Like each of us who trusts in his own understanding, I was easy prey for the purveyors of lies. It was after much pain that God opened my eyes to His wisdom for salvation—the provision of a Savior.
I didn't really want to be anywhere at 6 a.m. on a Friday, but my new friend, Clyde, had invited me to his Bible study. They were a scholarly group, spending weeks dissecting short segments of Scripture. Though I was blind to the spiritual significance, over time I became increasingly impacted by an observation I could not account for. It was 1986, and these men all worked in real estate-related businesses. The cycle had turned downward, and all of them were suffering economic hardship. As I projected myself into their uncertainty, I concluded I would be a nervous wreck. But they were not. The living testimony of their peace, trust, and confidence in the face of a storm displayed for me the difference Christ made in their lives. I wanted what they had, and I prayed to receive Him.
1. Do you live with an unbelieving spouse? Take heart! My wife's consistent model of grace softened my heart that the seed might take root. Pray for your loved one and love your spouse where he or she is.
2. Do you understand the infinite value of Wisdom to save your life (Ecclesiastes 7:12)? The wisdom the world tries to sell you will literally destroy you (Proverbs 16:25). Know Wisdom. Love Wisdom. Live Wisdom. Share Wisdom.
3. Do you have a healthy "fear of the Lord"? It is the beginning of Wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and is essential if Wisdom is to hold its rightful position atop your system of values.
