Central Truth

Are you struggling in life, or do you have pain in life? Do "bad people" (maybe even those close to you) seem to always "win?" Don't be disheartened. Be strengthened. The Lord God is faithful and is continually ready to "hold [your] right hand" and deliver you.

Key Verse | Psalm 73:26, 28

My flesh and my heart may grow weak,
but God always protects my heart and gives me stability.
. . . .
But as for me, God’s presence is all I need.
I have made the sovereign Lord my shelter,
as I declare all the things you have done.
(Psalm 73:26, 28)

Psalm 73 (Book 3)

Book Three

God Is My Strength and Portion Forever

A Psalm of Asaph.

Truly God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled,
    my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For they have no pangs until death;
    their bodies are fat and sleek.
They are not in trouble as others are;
    they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
    violence covers them as a garment.
Their eyes swell out through fatness;
    their hearts overflow with follies.
They scoff and speak with malice;
    loftily they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against the heavens,
    and their tongue struts through the earth.
10  Therefore his people turn back to them,
    and find no fault in them. 1 73:10 Probable reading; Hebrew the waters of a full cup are drained by them
11  And they say, “How can God know?
    Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12  Behold, these are the wicked;
    always at ease, they increase in riches.
13  All in vain have I kept my heart clean
    and washed my hands in innocence.
14  For all the day long I have been stricken
    and rebuked every morning.
15  If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
    I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

16  But when I thought how to understand this,
    it seemed to me a wearisome task,
17  until I went into the sanctuary of God;
    then I discerned their end.

18  Truly you set them in slippery places;
    you make them fall to ruin.
19  How they are destroyed in a moment,
    swept away utterly by terrors!
20  Like a dream when one awakes,
    O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.
21  When my soul was embittered,
    when I was pricked in heart,
22  I was brutish and ignorant;
    I was like a beast toward you.

23  Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
    you hold my right hand.
24  You guide me with your counsel,
    and afterward you will receive me to glory.
25  Whom have I in heaven but you?
    And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
26  My flesh and my heart may fail,
    but God is the strength 2 73:26 Hebrew rock of my heart and my portion forever.

27  For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
    you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
28  But for me it is good to be near God;
    I have made the Lord God my refuge,
    that I may tell of all your works.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 73 (Book 3)

I’ve experienced my most difficult struggles in life over the last couple of years. I’ve yearned for God's comfort, direction, and help, but where is He?

During my struggles, I've buried myself in the Psalms and felt a deep connection with David's pain, struggles, and loneliness. I’m comforted by the promises of the Lord throughout the Psalms: The godly cry out and the Lord hears; he saves them from all their troubles. (34:17) The Lord is near all who cry out to him . . . he hears their cry for help and delivers them. (145:18, 19) Like the Psalmist, I wonder during periods of adversity that perhaps it’s easier to quit or go the way of the "enemy" (Psalm 73:13). However, It was good for me to suffer,
so that I might learn your statutes. (119:71)

It’s not on the mountaintops that God is truly felt, heard, or experienced. Rather, it is in the deep and dark valleys. Also, delays of God’s deliverance are often to show His glory. While my struggles are great, God makes His presence known to me through other believers and His Word: When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. (Jeremiah 29:13a)

I continue to ask God for answers, but I realize they may not come in the form that I desire or understand. A jigsaw puzzle with no picture to go by and no idea of what it’s supposed to be would be very difficult to figure out. While my life can sometimes feel like this, everything is known and beautiful to God, with clear purpose. I am reminded that His understanding no one can fathom; His time is not my time, nor is His way my way; BUT His Word and His way are perfect and flawless. We can be comforted knowing that God loves us and is always watching over us like a father desiring to wrap up his child in his arms (Psalm 73:23).

Persevere in Christ Jesus! Remember, after a cold, harsh winter comes a warm, beautiful spring!

Discussion Questions

1. What struggle or pain are you experiencing right now in your life?

2. Are you seeking God's guidance or the world's guidance in delivering you from your struggle? Are you willing to let go and allow God to deliver you His way (even if you don't know what that outcome might bring to you)?

3. You can't train for a marathon by yourself (or many other disciplines), and you can't "do life" by yourself either. Are you in community with a few other believers to come up alongside you in all of your life? Will you be transparent, open, and authentic to them and to the Lord as you live life on the mountaintops as well as in the deep and dark valleys?
