Central Truth

God can be trusted with every detail of our life. Even when we can't see what He's doing (such as inside the womb), we can always trust Him!

Key Verse | Psalm 139:13

For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
(Psalm 139:13)

Psalm 139

Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

O LORD, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
    behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
    Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
    If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
    and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10  even there your hand shall lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me.
11  If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and the light about me be night,”
12  even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light with you.

13  For you formed my inward parts;
    you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. 1 139:14 Or for I am fearfully set apart
Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.
15  My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16  Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
    the days that were formed for me,
    when as yet there was none of them.

17  How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18  If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
    I awake, and I am still with you.

19  Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God!
    O men of blood, depart from me!
20  They speak against you with malicious intent;
    your enemies take your name in vain. 2 139:20 Hebrew lacks your name
21  Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD?
    And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
22  I hate them with complete hatred;
    I count them my enemies.

23  Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    Try me and know my thoughts! 3 139:23 Or cares
24  And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting! 4 139:24 Or in the ancient way (compare Jeremiah 6:16)

Dive Deeper | Psalm 139

December 15, 2010, is a day that changed our family's life forever (for the better). I remember the doctor sitting down on the bed next to my wife and saying, "Your son has features that are consistent with Trisomy 21." In other words, our first-born son Noah was born with Down syndrome. I remember my brain being flooded with emotions when I heard those words (and for weeks after), but thankfully I could look to God's Word as a source of peace and comfort during this unexpected right turn in our lives.

In Psalm 139:13, David says that he was knit by God in His mother's womb and that God is in control of every detail of everything in this world—even down to the very embryo of a person (verse 16). Our son being born with Down syndrome may have been a surprise to us, but it was no surprise to God. God saw Noah even when his tiny little cells were coming together (verse 16) and forming him. At the same time God was forming our son, He was also forming us.

Shortly after Noah was born we learned that, depending on which study you read, up to 92 per cent of children prenatally diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. So we started a website and began to tell our story. Noah's story has reached people all over the world and has helped families in ways I'll never know this side of heaven. Noah, without a doubt, has been one of the biggest blessings in our family's life.

Through Noah's birth, we were once again reminded that the story that God is writing for our lives is much better than any we could write. Even when life takes you for a right turn, you can still trust Him. The fact that God is in control even in microscopic ways in the womb is proof that we can trust Him in our everyday lives outside of the womb. I'm not sure what you're going through today, but you can trust God with the story He is writing for your life!

Discussion Questions

1. Has life ever taken you on a "right turn" that you never saw coming? Share about that experience in the comments to this Journey devo and describe what got you through it.

2. What's an area of your life right now where you need to be reminded that God can be trusted and that His plan for your life is better than yours?

3. With regard to life, when do you believe life begins? When does the psalmist believe life begins? Does your view line up with the psalmist's?
