Central Truth
Put God first. Put yourself second.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own understanding.
Acknowledge him in all your ways,
and he will make your paths straight.
(Proverbs 3:5-6)
1
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments,
2
for length of days and years of life
and peace they will add to you.
3
Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4
So you will find favor and good success

Honor the LORD with your wealth
and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
10
then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will be bursting with wine.
11
My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
12
for the LORD reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights.
13
Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding,
14
for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than gold.

She is more precious than jewels,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17
Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
and all her paths are peace.
18
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed.
19
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth;
by understanding he established the heavens;
20
by his knowledge the deeps broke open,
and the clouds drop down the dew.
21
My son, do not lose sight of these—
keep sound wisdom and discretion,
22
and they will be life for your soul
and adornment for your neck.
23
Then you will walk on your way securely,
and your foot will not stumble.

I often find myself putting my own selfish ambition and well ahead of God's plan. Now I am only a high school student, but from what I have learned in my short time here on this earth and just by reading this passage, I know that my own selfish ambition doesn't work. I can try as hard as I want to tell God how my life is going to work out, but let's just face it, when I do that, God is probably up in heaven laughing.
It's like when I'm out on the golf course about to hit a shot, I can say in my head, "OK, I'm just going to hit this ball over that tree that 5 feet in front of me and drop it in the hole 200 feet away for an eagle using a baseball bat." For those of you who know something about golf, you know that is impossible and rather dangerous. It's just like when we try to live our lives according to our own will rather than God's—it will not work and can be very dangerous. Just as the tree is an obstacle on the golf course, we all face many obstacles in our everyday lives. When we face an obstacle, we have two options. We can rely on ourselves and try to overcome it on our own, or we can rely on God to get us through it.
Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding." The only way we will ever be able to overcome an impossible obstacle, like hitting the ball over the tree, is with God's help. If you put your trust in God, you will "walk on your way with security, and you will not stumble. When you lie down you will not be filled with fear; when you lie down your sleep will be pleasant." (Proverbs 3:23-24) You will be able to overcome and accomplish things you never thought possible.
1. Have you been trying to get through life on your own?
2. What are some of the "trees" or obstacles in your life?
3. Have you asked God to help you overcome these obstacles? Why or why not?
