Central Truth

The Lord had just informed Jeremiah of all that was to happen to the people of Israel as the result of their disobedience. However, Jeremiah is different. He grieves for the judgment that is to come to his people because of their irreverence, yet he is living a life set apart.

Key Verse | Jeremiah 15:19

Therefore, thus says the LORD,
"If you return, then I will restore you –
Before Me you will stand;
And if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become My spokesman.
They for their part may turn to you,
But as for you, you must not turn to them."
(Jeremiah 15:19)

Jeremiah 15

The LORD Will Not Relent

Then the LORD said to me, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! And when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD:

‘Those who are for pestilence, to pestilence,
    and those who are for the sword, to the sword;
those who are for famine, to famine,
    and those who are for captivity, to captivity.’

I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the LORD: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. And I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem.

Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem,
    or who will grieve for you?
Who will turn aside
    to ask about your welfare?
You have rejected me, declares the LORD;
    you keep going backward,
so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you—
    I am weary of relenting.
I have winnowed them with a winnowing fork
    in the gates of the land;
I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people;
    they did not turn from their ways.
I have made their widows more in number
    than the sand of the seas;
I have brought against the mothers of young men
    a destroyer at noonday;
I have made anguish and terror
    fall upon them suddenly.
She who bore seven has grown feeble;
    she has fainted away;
her sun went down while it was yet day;
    she has been shamed and disgraced.
And the rest of them I will give to the sword
    before their enemies,
    declares the LORD.”

Jeremiah's Complaint

10 Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11 The LORD said, “Have I not 1 15:11 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12 Can one break iron, iron from the north, and bronze?

13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14 I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

15  O LORD, you know;
    remember me and visit me,
    and take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance take me not away;
    know that for your sake I bear reproach.
16  Your words were found, and I ate them,
    and your words became to me a joy
    and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
    O LORD, God of hosts.
17  I did not sit in the company of revelers,
    nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,
    for you had filled me with indignation.
18  Why is my pain unceasing,
    my wound incurable,
    refusing to be healed?
Will you be to me like a deceitful brook,
    like waters that fail?

19  Therefore thus says the LORD:
“If you return, I will restore you,
    and you shall stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
    you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
    but you shall not turn to them.
20  And I will make you to this people
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you,
    but they shall not prevail over you,
for I am with you
    to save you and deliver you,
    declares the LORD.
21  I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
    and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 15

Can you remember when you first accepted Christ for who He said He is? I remember very clearly that season of my life. I was in my early twenties. I packed up all my old music and sold it at a used CD store, for pennies on the dollar. I only listened to Christian radio. I was being discipled by a guy who eventually married my wife and me. I was baptized, and I latched on to 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." Most importantly, I was reading the Bible in a way that I had never read anything else. I was a different person because of Christ.

Yet slowly, as the newness wore off, the disciplines got weaker. I began longing for some of my old music again. I didn't need the CDs anymore; now I had iTunes. I could listen to Pearl Jam with a single click. I stopped listening to Christian radio because the DJs are just awful. I had less time for Bible study because I had a wife, and later children – let alone a full-time job. Before long, my life didn't look all that different than it had before I knew Christ, and I could justify each step along the way.

I can imagine that Israel's movement away from the Lord was marked by many small steps. I take comfort in knowing with full confidence, that I am a believer in Christ. The question is, does anyone else know it? How is my life set apart for the purpose of making Christ more famous? The Lord's response to Jeremiah in 15:19 reminds me that I need only return to the Lord, and I will be restored for the purpose of serving Him. He can still use me, even in my Pearl Jam loving state. I just hope He doesn't want me to listen to Phillips, Craig & Dean.

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 15-19 (APR 25-29)

Read Jeremiah 15:15-21.

How is Jeremiah feeling in verses 15-18? Who is he telling about how he feels? Who do you go to when you are struggling with fear, worry, or anger?

What is the Lord's response to Jeremiah in verses 19-21? Who is going to fight for Jeremiah and protect him? What does Jeremiah need to do (see verse 19)?

Verse 16 tells us that God's Word is good enough to eat! What do you think this means? What does food do for you? How is this similar to what God's Word does for us? When you are struggling, do you go to God's Word for comfort, peace, and joy?

Activity: Buy a cake mix and frosting (that you can write with) at the store. Bake the cake as a family. While the cake is baking and cooling, memorize Jeremiah 15:16. When the cake is cool, write "WORD" across the cake. As you eat it this week, be reminded that "eating" God's Word is great nourishment!
