Central Truth
Wisdom is invaluable and is found only in Christ. Once we have received a transforming faith, seeking the wisdom of Christ enables us to experience the life God intended.
He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor. (Proverbs 21:21, NIV)
"And he said to mankind, 'The fear of the LORD – that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.'" (Job 28:28)
1
Surely there is a mine for silver,
and a place for gold that they refine.
2
Iron is taken out of the earth,
and copper is smelted from the ore.
3
Man puts an end to darkness
and searches out to the farthest limit
the ore in gloom and deep darkness.
4
He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives;
they are forgotten by travelers;
they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro.
5
As for the earth, out of it comes bread,
but underneath it is turned up as by fire.
6
Its stones are the place of sapphires,
1
28:6
Or lapis lazuli; also verse 16
and it has dust of gold.
7
That path no bird of prey knows,
and the falcon's eye has not seen it.
8
The proud beasts have not trodden it;
the lion has not passed over it.
9
Man puts his hand to the flinty rock
and overturns mountains by the roots.
10
He cuts out channels in the rocks,
and his eye sees every precious thing.
11
He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle,
and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light.
12
But where shall wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13
Man does not know its worth,
and it is not found in the land of the living.
14
The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’
and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15
It cannot be bought for gold,
and silver cannot be weighed as its price.
16
It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
in precious onyx or sapphire.
17
Gold and glass cannot equal it,
nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.
18
No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal;
the price of wisdom is above pearls.
19
The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,
nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20
From where, then, does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
21
It is hidden from the eyes of all living
and concealed from the birds of the air.
22
Abaddon and Death say,
‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’
23
God understands the way to it,
and he knows its place.
24
For he looks to the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
25
When he gave to the wind its weight
and apportioned the waters by measure,
26
when he made a decree for the rain
and a way for the lightning of the thunder,
27
then he saw it and declared it;
he established it, and searched it out.
28
And he said to man,
‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
We're living in the "information age," but we certainly aren't living in the "age of wisdom." Many people who are wizards with their computers seem to be amateurs when it comes to making a success out of their lives. Computers can store data and obey signals, but they can't give us the ability to use that information wisely. We need biblical wisdom today.
In chapter 28 Job continues answering his friends who have suggested wisdom is found somewhere other than God. Reading Job teaches me that the source of all wisdom is God, to persevere in loving and serving others, and to always trust His plan in spite of my circumstances. If you do this, your faith will be rewarded.
Concerning worldly wealth, how much better is it to get wisdom than gold? How much easier and safer is it to trust in God's provision? Job speaks of wisdom and understanding, the knowing and enjoying of God and ourselves. Its worth is infinitely more than all the riches in this world. It is a gift of the Spirit, which cannot be bought with money.
If we can't find wisdom, we need to evaluate where to search for it. Where is this wisdom to be found? The treasures of it are hidden in Christ, revealed by the Word, and received by faith through the Holy Spirit. Wisdom teaches and encourages us to fear the Lord and to depart from evil, exercising repentance and faith.
In my life I have certainly experienced the wheels wobbling when I default to my sinful desires, when I feel I can handle success or adversity on my own, and when I try to accomplish my plans relying on my own strength. All of God's Word, but especially Proverbs, is a road map of wisdom that helps me stay the course when the potholes are plentiful.
I need to remind myself each day to, "Trust in the Lord with all [my] heart, and lean not on [my] own understanding; in all [my] ways acknowledge him, and he will make [my] paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)
1. James 1:5 says, "But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him." When you experience adversity and don't know how to respond, are you asking God to give you insight? Are you searching His Word for the wisdom He desires to provide?
2. Read Jeremiah 9:23-24. How would your closest friends describe you? Are you wise in the ways of the world or in the Scriptures and in knowing Him?
3. Living wisely is about knowing and living our priorities and principles based on God's Word. We learn from His Word that our priorities should not just focus on how to make a living, but how to be skillful in the lost art of making a life. What kind of life are you making? Are there specific changes you should consider?
