Central Truth

If we remind ourselves of God's faithfulness in the past, we can find peace during times of trial in the future. God is faithful, despite our failures.

Key Verse | Psalm 81:10

"I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."
(Psalm 81:10)

Psalm 81

Oh, That My People Would Listen to Me

To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. 1 81:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term Of Asaph.

Sing aloud to God our strength;
    shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
Raise a song; sound the tambourine,
    the sweet lyre with the harp.
Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
    at the full moon, on our feast day.

For it is a statute for Israel,
    a rule 2 81:4 Or just decree of the God of Jacob.
He made it a decree in Joseph
    when he went out over 3 81:5 Or against the land of Egypt.
I hear a language I had not known:
“I relieved your 4 81:6 Hebrew his; also next line shoulder of the burden;
    your hands were freed from the basket.
In distress you called, and I delivered you;
    I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
    I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
    O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
    you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10  I am the LORD your God,
    who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
    Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

11  But my people did not listen to my voice;
    Israel would not submit to me.
12  So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts,
    to follow their own counsels.
13  Oh, that my people would listen to me,
    that Israel would walk in my ways!
14  I would soon subdue their enemies
    and turn my hand against their foes.
15  Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward him,
    and their fate would last forever.
16  But he would feed you 5 81:16 That is, Israel; Hebrew him with the finest of the wheat,
    and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

Dive Deeper | Psalm 81

A couple of years ago, I found an old prayer journal I kept in college. As I read through it, I was literally able to check off the entries showing God had been faithfully in control of my life. I sat there in awe of His sovereignty, and it wasn’t because He gave me everything I’d asked for like a magic genie (thank goodness). He graciously carried me through some difficult situations, changed my desires in others, and lovingly answered many prayers. John 16:33 warns us that “[i]n the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

If we journal or tell others in our community about the Lord’s faithfulness in our own lives, we can find comfort remembering the past when the next storm comes. The answered prayer, the unexplained peace, or the world’s natural beauty show that His hand is over everything if we just open our hearts to recognize it.

God is ready to fill our emptiness once we’re ready to stop filling it with fleeting worldly desires or “if only” scenarios. As painful as it is to read about some of Israel’s disobedience and lack of trust throughout the Old Testament, our desire to fix things through our own will or our choice to be consumed with worry is no different.

A theme I hold dear from our Women’s Bible Study in Exodus is that God is faithful, despite our failures. Life is not about who we are, but who God is. He greatly wants us to follow Him. He knows life works much better when we’re obedient. He will satisfy us with honey from the rock (verse 16).  His sweet blessings can sustain us in trials.

The closer I grow to the Lord, the more I see how much I have left to grow. Still, I rest in the freedom of knowing I am His child. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
