Central Truth
No one can serve two masters; either he will hate the One and love the other, or he will be devoted to the One and despise the other.
"Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your light will break out like the dawn,
And your recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard."
(Isaiah 58:7-8)
1
“Cry aloud; do not hold back;
lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.
2
Yet they seek me daily
and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that did righteousness
and did not forsake the judgment of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments;
they delight to draw near to God.
3
‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
1
58:3
Or pursue your own business
and oppress all your workers.
4
Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
will not make your voice to be heard on high.
5
Is such the fast that I choose,
a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and a day acceptable to the LORD?
6
Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed
2
58:6
Or bruised
go free,
and to break every yoke?
7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8
Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
9
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10
if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.
11
And the LORD will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
12
And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in.
13
If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure
3
58:13
Or business
on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the LORD honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure,
4
58:13
Or pursuing your own business
or talking idly;
5
58:13
Hebrew or speaking a word
14
then you shall take delight in the LORD,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
6
58:14
Or of the land
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
God: Day after day, you seek me out; you seem eager to know My ways, as if you were a man who does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of your God.
Me: Father, when I worship, why do You feel distant? Why have I humbled myself, and You have not noticed?
God: My son, on the day of your worship, you go through the motions and only seek to serve yourself. Your heart is far from Me and busy, distracted by the things of the world. You want people to know about your sacrifices so that it's about you and not Me. Your worship ends in being exhausted not because you spent yourself on My behalf, but because your cup was empty to begin with. You never filled it with Me.
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the One and love the other, or you will be devoted to the One and despise the other.
Did you think that showing up on Sunday and halfheartedly singing songs bring Me honor? Did you think bowing your head, but not your heart, gives Me glory?
Isn't this what I've taught you in My Word? Give yourself away for the sake of others. Use your giftedness to tell the story of the orphan, the widow, and the stranger. Set them free by giving them a voice.
Love your neighbor as yourself. Give shelter when he is wandering and give him food when he is hungry. Clothe him when he is naked.
But you would just rather look away or down at your watch. Take some time, roll down your window, and engage his heart. When you see the lonely, stop and give of yourself.
Then you will shine as I've always desired! I will be your rear guard. You will call, and I will answer. I will provide what you need for the journey and give you strength! Then you will experience the full joy I have for you!
1. Are you consistently devoted to God? If so, do you/others see fruit in your life?
2. What divides your devotion? And what do you need to fast from?
3. How are you giving yourself away for the Lord right now?
4. Who are you serving who can do nothing in return for you?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
ISAIAH 56-60 (MAR 21-25)
Read Isaiah 56:1-2.
What does the Lord ask us to do? If we do these things, we will be blessed. What do you think this blessing looks like?
Read Isaiah 58:6-14.
What are the things He says we should do here? What does He consider to be a blessing?
Activity: Talk about verse 7. Who do you know that is in need-- whether for shelter, food, or clothing? What can you do to make a sacrifice to meet one of these needs for someone? Look in your closets and take clothes to a clothing bank? Go serve a meal at a shelter? Put meals in your car and go look for someone in need?
After doing the activity in the previous paragraph, what was it like? Did you experience blessing because of your time being obedient to what He calls us to do?
