Central Truth
God and His ways are incomprehensible to us.
"Can you discover the essence of God? Can you find out the perfection of the Almighty? It is higher than the heavens – what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol – what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea." (Job 11:7-9)
1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:
2
“Should a multitude of words go unanswered,
and a man full of talk be judged right?
3
Should your babble silence men,
and when you mock, shall no one shame you?
4
For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure,
and I am clean in God's

eyes.’
5
But oh, that God would speak
and open his lips to you,
6
and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom!
For he is manifold in understanding.

11:6
The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.
7
Can you find out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?
8
It is higher than heaven

—what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
9
Its measure is longer than the earth
and broader than the sea.
10
If he passes through and imprisons
and summons the court, who can turn him back?
11
For he knows worthless men;
when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it?
12
But a stupid man will get understanding
when a wild donkey's colt is born a man!
13
If you prepare your heart,
you will stretch out your hands toward him.
14
If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away,
and let not injustice dwell in your tents.
15
Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish;
you will be secure and will not fear.
16
You will forget your misery;
you will remember it as waters that have passed away.
17
And your life will be brighter than the noonday;
its darkness will be like the morning.
18
And you will feel secure, because there is hope;
you will look around and take your rest in security.
19
You will lie down, and none will make you afraid;
many will court your favor.
20
But the eyes of the wicked will fail;
all way of escape will be lost to them,
and their hope is to breathe their last.”
I wholeheartedly believe Zophar’s charge and reminder to Job that God and His ways are far beyond us. So far, in fact, that we don’t really even have units of measure to begin to talk about or understand His greatness.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like everything in my life is fairly explainable. With tools like Wikipedia and Google at my disposal I can become an instant expert on any topic ranging from obscure African animals to how to cook a soufflé before I even finish my first cup of coffee in the morning. Being alive during the information age certainly has its benefits. The problem begins, though, when I conceive God to be like any other topic that I can search for and distill down into five bullet points from a Wikipedia entry. When I treat God like a topic to be studied, mastered, and easily explained, then, to be quite honest, I become bored with Him. My relationship with Him isn’t vibrant, and my relationships with others take on a generally bland and unhelpful tone.
Something happens, however, when I savor the wonder of the things I understand about God and in humility and awe acknowledge that I don’t even understand the half of who He is or the way He works (Job 38 is a great help in setting your heart in a posture like this). During these times God becomes huge to me, and I see Him as a being that is completely different from me. This puts me in a position in which I want to worship Him fully, both with my words and my life.
As I read this passage, I realized my view of God was too small. I prayed that He would give us insights into who He is and how He loves us (Ephesians 3:19) and that we would also find ourselves completely awestruck and worshiping our indescribable God.
1. When is the last time that you took an attribute of God like His love or wisdom and thought deeply about how different God is from you, worshiping Him as a result?
2. Are there areas in which you are currently being disobedient? Are you bored with God? Could it be that you have a small view of God?
