Central Truth

Far too often, our view of God is informed more by emotions, limited human understanding, negative experiences, and outright lies of Satan than it is by the truth of who God is as revealed in Scripture. God is a warrior!

Key Verse | Isaiah 45:2

“I will go before you and make the rough places smooth;
I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars."
(Isaiah 45:2)

Isaiah 45

Cyrus, God's Instrument

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus,
    whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
    and to loose the belts of kings,
to open doors before him
    that gates may not be closed:
“I will go before you
    and level the exalted places, 1 45:2 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scroll, Septuagint level the mountains
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
    and cut through the bars of iron,
I will give you the treasures of darkness
    and the hoards in secret places,
that you may know that it is I, the LORD,
    the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
For the sake of my servant Jacob,
    and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
    I name you, though you do not know me.
I am the LORD, and there is no other,
    besides me there is no God;
    I equip you, though you do not know me,
that people may know, from the rising of the sun
    and from the west, that there is none besides me;
    I am the LORD, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness;
    I make well-being and create calamity;
    I am the LORD, who does all these things.

Shower, O heavens, from above,
    and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
    let the earth cause them both to sprout;
    I the LORD have created it.

Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
    a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
    or ‘Your work has no handles’?
10  Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’
    or to a woman, ‘With what are you in labor?’”

11  Thus says the LORD,
    the Holy One of Israel, and the one who formed him:
“Ask me of things to come;
    will you command me concerning my children and the work of my hands? 2 45:11 A slight emendation yields will you question me about my children, or command me concerning the work of my hands?
12  I made the earth
    and created man on it;
it was my hands that stretched out the heavens,
    and I commanded all their host.
13  I have stirred him up in righteousness,
    and I will make all his ways level;
he shall build my city
    and set my exiles free,
not for price or reward,”
    says the LORD of hosts.

The LORD, the Only Savior

14  Thus says the LORD:
“The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush,
    and the Sabeans, men of stature,
shall come over to you and be yours;
    they shall follow you;
    they shall come over in chains and bow down to you.
They will plead with you, saying:
    ‘Surely God is in you, and there is no other,
    no god besides him.’”

15  Truly, you are a God who hides himself,
    O God of Israel, the Savior.
16  All of them are put to shame and confounded;
    the makers of idols go in confusion together.
17  But Israel is saved by the LORD
    with everlasting salvation;
you shall not be put to shame or confounded
    to all eternity.

18  For thus says the LORD,
who created the heavens
    (he is God!),
who formed the earth and made it
    (he established it;
he did not create it empty,
    he formed it to be inhabited!):
“I am the LORD, and there is no other.
19  I did not speak in secret,
    in a land of darkness;
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
    ‘Seek me in vain.’ 3 45:19 Hebrew in emptiness
I the LORD speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.

20  Assemble yourselves and come;
    draw near together,
    you survivors of the nations!
They have no knowledge
    who carry about their wooden idols,
and keep on praying to a god
    that cannot save.
21  Declare and present your case;
    let them take counsel together!
Who told this long ago?
    Who declared it of old?
Was it not I, the LORD?
    And there is no other god besides me,
a righteous God and a Savior;
    there is none besides me.

22  Turn to me and be saved,
    all the ends of the earth!
    For I am God, and there is no other.
23  By myself I have sworn;
    from my mouth has gone out in righteousness
    a word that shall not return:
‘To me every knee shall bow,
    every tongue shall swear allegiance.’ 4 45:23 Septuagint every tongue shall confess to God

24  Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me,
    are righteousness and strength;
to him shall come and be ashamed
    all who were incensed against him.
25  In the LORD all the offspring of Israel
    shall be justified and shall glory.”

Dive Deeper | Isaiah 45

Over the course of my life, I've believed many lies about God. I'd like to say I believed these lies only because I was an innocent lamb who was duped by a crafty liar. But for the most part, I chose to believe these lies because they were easier to believe than the truth. The lies didn't force me to to search Scripture for the truth of who God really is. And, well, the lies actually allowed me to coddle sin.

One of the biggest and most destructive lies that I've believed about God is that He is passive—about me AND my sin. Yet, I've never come across any instances of God being passive in Scripture.

Today's verse gives me a view of God that I don't think enough about: God as Warrior. When we read verses like Isaiah 45:2, we get a view of a different, more "William Wallace-type" God than the God I had gotten comfortable with for so many years.

For most of my life the “God of Derek Scott” wasn’t one who could make rough places smooth, level mountains, or cut through bars of iron. Truth was, He wasn’t much stronger than I. That’s how my belief of lies about God had distorted the image of the Warrior King we read about in Isaiah 45.

In his song, Alive Again, Matt Maher sings,

“You called and You shouted
Broke through my deafness
Now I’m breathing in and breathing out
I’m alive again.”

When it comes to the kind of sin I’m capable of when left to myself, I don’t want the wimpy, indifferent God I had settled for all those years. I want a God who loves and cares enough about me to shout into my deafness. I want a God who’s willing to make me uncomfortable, a God who’s willing to lovingly get in my face about my sin, and a God who’s unwilling to leave me to myself.

Discussion Questions

1. What’s your view of God like? Is He more like the God of Scripture, or is He a distorted version of it?

2. Who or what informs your view of God more? The truth of Scripture or something like negative past experiences?

3. God wants you to know Him for who He really is. Do you want to know Him for who He really is? If not, why?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

ISAIAH 41-45 (FEB 28-MAR 4)

Read Isaiah 43:1-4.

God is talking to Israel, His chosen people. Because of Jesus, we also have the opportunity to be a part of God’s chosen people. When you have accepted Him as your Savior, you can know these truths as your own. In verses 1 and 4, what is true about God’s chosen people? How do you feel knowing that God knows your name and that you are precious to Him?

Now read verse 2 again. How many times does He use the word when? This tells us that hard things will happen in our lives. But what does He promise you He will do? How do you feel knowing that God will be with you in hard times?

Activity: Make a list of “who God is” (look in verses 1, 3, and 4). Now talk about hard things that have happened in your life and how you have seen God be with you even in the midst of those hard things.
