Central Truth

God doesn't need our works or sacrifices. He especially doesn't want our empty works. God wants a genuine relationship and a thankful child.

Key Verse | Psalm 50:23

"The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
to one who orders his way rightly
I will show the salvation of God!"
(Psalm 50:23)

Psalm 50

God Himself Is Judge

A Psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God the LORD,
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
    God shines forth.

Our God comes; he does not keep silence; 1 50:3 Or May our God come, and not keep silence
    before him is a devouring fire,
    around him a mighty tempest.
He calls to the heavens above
    and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
“Gather to me my faithful ones,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The heavens declare his righteousness,
    for God himself is judge! Selah

“Hear, O my people, and I will speak;
    O Israel, I will testify against you.
    I am God, your God.
Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;
    your burnt offerings are continually before me.
I will not accept a bull from your house
    or goats from your folds.
10  For every beast of the forest is mine,
    the cattle on a thousand hills.
11  I know all the birds of the hills,
    and all that moves in the field is mine.

12  If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
    for the world and its fullness are mine.
13  Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?
14  Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, 2 50:14 Or Make thanksgiving your sacrifice to God
    and perform your vows to the Most High,
15  and call upon me in the day of trouble;
    I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

16  But to the wicked God says:
    “What right have you to recite my statutes
    or take my covenant on your lips?
17  For you hate discipline,
    and you cast my words behind you.
18  If you see a thief, you are pleased with him,
    and you keep company with adulterers.

19  You give your mouth free rein for evil,
    and your tongue frames deceit.
20  You sit and speak against your brother;
    you slander your own mother's son.
21  These things you have done, and I have been silent;
    you thought that I 3 50:21 Or that the I am was one like yourself.
But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

22  Mark this, then, you who forget God,
    lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!
23  The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
    to one who orders his way rightly
    I will show the salvation of God!”

Dive Deeper | Psalm 50

God is the Creator. He created everything we see and know. He intimately created you and me. Therefore, He knows us intimately, down to what happens in our hearts and minds.

When I first became a Christian, honestly the biggest reason I wanted to was to try to cheat God. I recognized that soccer was my idol, and I was afraid that God would take it away from me in a horrible way so that I could focus on Him. I was so afraid of this that I decided I would be a great Christian so that God wouldn't have a reason to take soccer away from me. What a fool I was.

Psalm 50 tells of people with empty works and sacrifices. Some call it a check-the-box faith. For one, God doesn't need our sacrifices. In the Old Testament, people would kill animals to sacrifice to God, but God explains in verses 9-10 that He doesn't need them. He literally is God. He owns every animal already.

And if God doesn't need our sacrifices, how much does He really not need or want our sacrifices that don't have meaning behind them? What I didn't understand was that God knew my intentions for wanting to be a Christian. I wasn't being genuine. Everything I did was to try to be good so I could live how I wanted and have what I wanted. God didn't want that, though.

What does God want then? All God wants is for us to have a genuine relationship with Him. How amazing is that! Just let that sink in. That's all He asks for.

God wants a child who will follow His ways because of our thankfulness for what He did on the cross through Jesus. A true sacrifice to God, then, is our full lives, full obedience, and full thanksgiving.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you ever try to cheat God by believing that if you do something He wants, you will get to keep something you love? If so, what is wrong about that view of God?

2. What are God's true characteristics?

3. What are some idols in your life that are hard for you to give up?

4. God not only wants our lives as a sacrifice to Him, He wants us to do it thankfully and joyfully. Read the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). What kind of heart did the older brother have? Are you ever not thankful that we can surrender our lives to Christ? Why should we be thankful we can?
