Central Truth

Judah was going through the motions.

Key Verse | Isaiah 29:13

Then the Lord said,
"Because this people draw near with their words
And honor Me with their lip service,
But they remove their hearts far from Me,
And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote."
(Isaiah 29:13)

Isaiah 29

The Siege of Jerusalem

Ah, Ariel, Ariel,
    the city where David encamped!
Add year to year;
    let the feasts run their round.
Yet I will distress Ariel,
    and there shall be moaning and lamentation,
    and she shall be to me like an Ariel. 1 29:2 Ariel could mean lion of God, or hero (2 Samuel 23:20), or altar hearth (Ezekiel 43:1516)
And I will encamp against you all around,
    and will besiege you with towers
    and I will raise siegeworks against you.
And you will be brought low; from the earth you shall speak,
    and from the dust your speech will be bowed down;
your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost,
    and from the dust your speech shall whisper.

But the multitude of your foreign foes shall be like small dust,
    and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff.
And in an instant, suddenly,
    you will be visited by the LORD of hosts
with thunder and with earthquake and great noise,
    with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.
And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,
    all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her,
    shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.
As when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating,
    and awakes with his hunger not satisfied,
or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking,
    and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched,
so shall the multitude of all the nations be
    that fight against Mount Zion.

Astonish yourselves 2 29:9 Or Linger awhile and be astonished;
    blind yourselves and be blind!
Be drunk, 3 29:9 Or They are drunk but not with wine;
    stagger, 4 29:9 Or they stagger but not with strong drink!
10  For the LORD has poured out upon you
    a spirit of deep sleep,
and has closed your eyes (the prophets),
    and covered your heads (the seers).

11 And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” 12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

13  And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
    and honor me with their lips,
    while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
14  therefore, behold, I will again
    do wonderful things with this people,
    with wonder upon wonder;
and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
    and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

15  Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel,
    whose deeds are in the dark,
    and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”
16  You turn things upside down!
Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
that the thing made should say of its maker,
    “He did not make me”;
or the thing formed say of him who formed it,
    “He has no understanding”?

17  Is it not yet a very little while
    until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
    and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?
18  In that day the deaf shall hear
    the words of a book,
and out of their gloom and darkness
    the eyes of the blind shall see.
19  The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD,
    and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.
20  For the ruthless shall come to nothing
    and the scoffer cease,
    and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,
21  who by a word make a man out to be an offender,
    and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate,
    and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.

22 Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:

“Jacob shall no more be ashamed,
    no more shall his face grow pale.
23  For when he sees his children,
    the work of my hands, in his midst,
    they will sanctify my name;
they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
    and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24  And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding,
    and those who murmur will accept instruction.”

Dive Deeper | Isaiah 29

You can't judge a book by its cover. Often, this pithy saying has a good connotation, like one is pleasantly surprised when good things come from poor conditions. But as in Judah's case, the connotation can be negative. The mere appearance of a healthy spiritual life does not necessarily reflect a person's or nation's true relationship with God.

The nation of Judah had long been going through the motions. Its religious leaders dressed themselves in the finest clothes and led the people in all the proper religious festivals, but few were actually walking with the Lord. Even when the Lord brought the most powerful army in the world to Jerusalem's doorstep threatening annihilation, the people still did not wake up from their spiritual dullness. Isaiah says they staggered around like drunk men in a slumber (29:9-10).

It is easy to sit in judgment of Judah. We want to scream, "WAKE UP!," and shake the dullness out of these people. We must be careful, though. History repeats itself, and I'll be the first to say there are areas of my life that are spiritually dull.

We work really hard at keeping up appearances. We attend church regularly. We join a community group. We even serve consistently, but in reality we still have areas of our lives we have failed to surrender to the Lord.

The Lord may have your outward piety, but does He have your heart? Your heart is the one thing He's after.

The essential question here is, "Can God can be trusted?" We are much more apt to quit playing games and give up the facade of control when we believe that the Lord is better than what we relinquish.

Sadly, in practice many of us do not believe this, even in the face of the Lord proving to generation after generation that He is better. He drove away the Assyrians, then some 700 years later drove away our sin and death. He is trustworthy. I promise.

Discussion Questions

1. What areas of your life are spiritually dull?

2. What keeps you from surrendering your whole heart to the Lord?

3. In what ways has the Lord shown Himself trustworthy in your life?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

ISAIAH 26-30 (FEB 7-11)

Read Isaiah 26:3-4.

What does verse 4 say God is? What are characteristics of a big rock, like a boulder? (e.g., immovable, firm, solid)

Read Isaiah 28:16.

Who is the cornerstone that God gave us? (Read also Acts 4:11-12)

Activity: Walk around your house, yard, and neighborhood. Look for different things that you can build on. Talk about each of them and decide if they would be a good place to build a house. Even talk about crazy things like your bed, or the swimming pool, or sand.
Now read Matthew 7:24-27. What does Scripture say is the best place to build your house?

We learned earlier that God is our eternal Rock and Jesus is the One on whom we should build our lives. Reread Isaiah 26:3-4. What does God say He will do for you if you trust Him? Does this mean that nothing hard will happen in your life if you trust in God? Hard things will inevitably come, but what does it look like to be in perfect peace? (This comes from keeping your eyes on God and believing that He is in control and that He is good.)
