Central Truth

Trusting in Christ brings us peace during the present and hope for the future.

Key Verse | Isaiah 26:3–4

The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
For in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.
(Isaiah 26:3-4)

Isaiah 26

You Keep Him in Perfect Peace

In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a strong city;
    he sets up salvation
    as walls and bulwarks.
Open the gates,
    that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in.
You keep him in perfect peace
    whose mind is stayed on you,
    because he trusts in you.
Trust in the LORD forever,
    for the LORD God is an everlasting rock.
For he has humbled
    the inhabitants of the height,
    the lofty city.
He lays it low, lays it low to the ground,
    casts it to the dust.
The foot tramples it,
    the feet of the poor,
    the steps of the needy.”

The path of the righteous is level;
    you make level the way of the righteous.
In the path of your judgments,
    O LORD, we wait for you;
your name and remembrance
    are the desire of our soul.
My soul yearns for you in the night;
    my spirit within me earnestly seeks you.
For when your judgments are in the earth,
    the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
10  If favor is shown to the wicked,
    he does not learn righteousness;
in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly
    and does not see the majesty of the LORD.
11  O LORD, your hand is lifted up,
    but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people, and be ashamed.
    Let the fire for your adversaries consume them.
12  O LORD, you will ordain peace for us,
    for you have indeed done for us all our works.
13  O LORD our God,
    other lords besides you have ruled over us,
    but your name alone we bring to remembrance.
14  They are dead, they will not live;
    they are shades, they will not arise;
to that end you have visited them with destruction
    and wiped out all remembrance of them.
15  But you have increased the nation, O LORD,
    you have increased the nation; you are glorified;
    you have enlarged all the borders of the land.

16  O LORD, in distress they sought you;
    they poured out a whispered prayer
    when your discipline was upon them.
17  Like a pregnant woman
    who writhes and cries out in her pangs
    when she is near to giving birth,
so were we because of you, O LORD;
18      we were pregnant, we writhed,
    but we have given birth to wind.
We have accomplished no deliverance in the earth,
    and the inhabitants of the world have not fallen.
19  Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise.
    You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy!
For your dew is a dew of light,
    and the earth will give birth to the dead.

20  Come, my people, enter your chambers,
    and shut your doors behind you;
hide yourselves for a little while
    until the fury has passed by.
21  For behold, the LORD is coming out from his place
    to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity,
and the earth will disclose the blood shed on it,
    and will no more cover its slain.

Dive Deeper | Isaiah 26

I am writing this devotional as I make my way back from a girls' trip to Scottsdale, Arizona. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are descending into Dallas, please make sure your seat belts are fastened, and your seats are in the upright position." Landing! I can take off and fly anywhere, but the landing makes me nervous. So, the landing gear goes down, but then I hear the landing gear go up, the engines roar, and the plane starts ascending! My heart and mind are racing.

"I'm sorry for the delay. Technical difficulty with the landing gear, but now it appears to be fine. Let's try this again."

"What! Try it again?" I scream in my head. Immediately, I begin to pray. Sure enough, Isaiah 26:3-4 spoke to me loud and clear. Trust, Peace, and Hope.

Trust—The dictionary defines this as "confidence or faith in." It also says, "Reliance without fear." I have faith in Christ as my Lord and Savior, and yet I still battle relying on Him without fearing the day-to-day.

Peace—As believers, there is peace because of the trust placed in Christ as Savior. There is also peace in living on this earth and not of it. It comes through seeking God's heart in all things rather than looking for Him to change the circumstances.

Hope—Hope is the assurance that one day Christ will return. As God's people, we will rejoice that He has overcome the world and all the stuff that goes along with living here (John 16:33).

Titus 2:11-13 sums up Isaiah 26 beautifully. "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus."

The end of my landing story? As we descended for the second time, I realized that I didn't have control over what was ahead. But I do know my trust in Christ guarantees a final landing in His Heavenly Kingdom.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you have the right landing gear (a personal relationship with Christ, trusting in Him as your Lord and Savior)?

2. If so, how is your flight? (Are you living sensibly, righteously, and godly?)

3. How can we experience peace during very difficult circumstances?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

ISAIAH 26-30 (FEB 7-11)

Read Isaiah 26:3-4.

What does verse 4 say God is? What are characteristics of a big rock, like a boulder? (e.g., immovable, firm, solid)

Read Isaiah 28:16.

Who is the cornerstone that God gave us? (Read also Acts 4:11-12)

Activity: Walk around your house, yard, and neighborhood. Look for different things that you can build on. Talk about each of them and decide if they would be a good place to build a house. Even talk about crazy things like your bed, or the swimming pool, or sand.
Now read Matthew 7:24-27. What does Scripture say is the best place to build your house?

We learned earlier that God is our eternal Rock and Jesus is the One on whom we should build our lives. Reread Isaiah 26:3-4. What does God say He will do for you if you trust Him? Does this mean that nothing hard will happen in your life if you trust in God? Hard things will inevitably come, but what does it look like to be in perfect peace? (This comes from keeping your eyes on God and believing that He is in control and that He is good.)
