Central Truth

Our Lord is a big, massive, perfectly holy, all powerful, mighty, victorious King. Christ alone is worthy, He is the King of Glory!

Key Verse | Psalm 24:10

Who is this majestic king? The Lord who commands armies! He is the majestic king! (Psalm 24:10)

Psalm 24

The King of Glory

A Psalm of David.

The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, 1 24:1 Or and all that fills it
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the LORD
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. 2 24:6 Septuagint, Syriac, and two Hebrew manuscripts; Masoretic Text who seek your face, Jacob Selah

Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD, strong and mighty,
    the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10  Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah

Dive Deeper | Psalm 24

Last summer, three other moms and I fell victim to the tug of our preteens' hearts. It was a very hot evening, but not one girl seemed to care. It was crowded, but that only made the anticipation grow. When the moment came, you could not even hear the sound of your own sneeze because of the ear-shattering screech that came from hundreds of screaming girls. You guessed it! The Jonas Brothers! I have been to many concerts, but never in my life have I heard a noise so deafening! I looked at the mom next to me, also with her hands over her ears, in total amazement that these little girls could be this excited over three boys there to play some songs. The anticipation of their entrance was expressed with overwhelming excitement like I had never seen. While I am happy our girls enjoyed the evening, and happy we all somehow made it home with our hearing, I found myself convicted.

While I studied Psalm 24, I saw David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, singing about a Messiah he himself would never get to see! David sang with GREAT excitement, not only because he anticipated the coming Messiah, but because David understood who God is. We have even more reason to praise our Lord for His sacrifice on the cross and forgiveness of our sins. Why is it I need a winning touchdown or perfect score to jump to my feet? Isn't my Lord worthy of at least that from me? After all, the earth and everything in it belong to Him! I believe if we could fully wrap our minds around who our King is, we, too, would respond the way the girls did at the concert with true excitement, or the way David did in Psalm 24, with a great outpouring of praise. We should find it impossible to stay seated!

Discussion Questions

1. Name three people for whom, if they entered a room, you would stand in awe. Why?
2. Name three things that have brought you to your feet in excitement over the last year and why.
3. Do you find it difficult to feel excitement for a star-breathing God who lowered Himself to become human flesh and hang on a cross just because He loves you? Why?
4. Verse 6 (NIV) says, "Such is the generation of those who seek him . . . ." What does it mean to you to seek the Lord?
