Central Truth

There have always been and always will be those who are destructive to the faith by teaching others to follow another gospel. But we need not fear. We guard the faith by focusing on the truth and getting closer to the authentic Jesus as revealed in the Bible.

Key Verse | Jude 1:20-23

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

Jude 1–25

Greeting

Jude, a servant 1 1:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface of Jesus Christ and brother of James,

To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for 2 1:1 Or by Jesus Christ:

May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Judgment on False Teachers

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved 3 1:5 Some manuscripts although you fully knew it, that the Lord who once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, 4 1:7 Greek different flesh serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10 But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam's error and perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs 5 1:12 Or are blemishes at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They 6 1:18 Or Christ, because they said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment 7 1:23 Greek chiton, a long garment worn under the cloak next to the skin stained by the flesh.

Doxology

24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time 8 1:25 Or before any age and now and forever. Amen.

Dive Deeper | Jude 1–25

Raise your hand if you always hear the Beatles song in your head when you turn to this book. I do! Let's use the song to help us summarize this one-chapter book:

Hey, Jude! Thanks for the note.

You may have noticed, false teachers crept in.

(We'll) remember to focus on our true faith,

And we will let Jesus make it better.

(Maybe I should let Chris be the only songwriter in the family!)

Remember those popular books that guessed how end-time events such as the tribulation might play out? Being immature in my faith when I read them, I feared that I would be led astray by false prophets in the end times. In Jude, we see that we don't have to be "left behind" to face false teachers—there have always been and always will be false teachers. They are false teachers because they "pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." (Jude 1:4) And God takes it seriously. They are destined for condemnation. Jude points to Old Testament examples of false teachers: Cain (Genesis 4:8-16); Balaam (Deuteronomy 23:3-6; Revelation 2:14); and Korah (Numbers 16:1-35).

We needn't fear we won't recognize false teachers. Those of us who desire to stay in the true faith have a game plan right in Jude 1:17-25: build up your faith, pray, keep yourself in the love of God, wait for Jesus, have mercy on those who doubt, share the gospel faithfully, and hate the sin that stains sinners.

Much like focusing on an authentic piece of art helps to identify a counterfeit, we can identify the true faith by reading the Bible, being in Bible-loving community, praying, being patient with one another when we doubt God, and repenting of sins. That will give us confidence to keep singing our song of praise to the Lord.

It's so much better than a bunch of na-na-na-nahs (sing with me):

To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Be glo-ry, maj-es-ty, do-min-ion, and authority! (Jude 1:25)

(Thanks for bearing with me!)

Discussion Questions

1. Cain, Balaam, and Korah departed from the true faith in different ways. Read about each of them using the citations above and Jude 1:11. Which of their departures most entices you?

2. Are you confident in your ability to recognize false teachings? If not, take the Bereans as your example (Acts 17:10-11). They heard the word preached and received it with eagerness but also examined the Scripture daily to see if what they'd heard was true. Equipped Disciple classes or Training Day sessions are also great supplements as you start aligning yourself with God's teaching.

3. Teaching God's Word to three-year-olds is a challenge in understanding and summarizing the key takeaways of Bible reading. How would you explain to a three-year-old the main ideas from your time in Jude today and how you plan to apply them? Keep this as your takeaway for today, and try to find a way to share it with others God puts in your path.

4. Are there false teachings from which you need to repent? Judge your practices and beliefs against the Bible and confess to your community group or to another Jesus-follower the ways you have departed from the true gospel. Ask them to hold you accountable to renewing your mind so that you will know God's will (Romans 12:2).
