Central Truth

The Lord's command is that we love Him fully and completely with every aspect of who we are. God's blessing is found in this complete devotion.

Key Verse | Deuteronomy 6:5

"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."

Deuteronomy 10:12–13

Circumcise Your Heart

12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good?

Dive Deeper | Deuteronomy 10:12–13

What's harder than writing a summary of one of Todd's messages (which happens every week)? Writing a summary of three sermons from Moses. Fortunately, others have: if you have eight minutes, this visual and audio summary of Deuteronomy by the Bible Project is excellent and worth your time.

Back in Deuteronomy 6, (and again in chapters 7, 10, twice in 11, 13, 23, and 30) Moses commands us to love God. Jesus, when asked, "Which is the great commandment in the Law?" (Matthew 22:36-40), replies with today's key verses (as well as another verse from Leviticus, but this isn't a summary of Leviticus). What then does it mean to love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your might?

All is a huge word. If that wasn't big enough, that modifier is attached to your heart, mind, soul, and strength—does that leave anything out? (Note: Jesus' words in the New Testament expand on the original text of "heart, soul, and strength.") These categories help in our own diagnostic, don't they? For some, one category might be easy to love God fully, while another category might be difficult. But strength in one area is no excuse of apathy in another. Let's find some Scripture on each:

Heart: "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him." (2 Chronicles 16:9a)

Mind: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2)

Soul: "As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul." (Psalm 63:5a, NET)

Strength: "Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified." (1 Corinthians 9:27, NET)

Lord, let our minds be overwhelmed by You. Let our souls be satisfied in You. Let our hearts rejoice in You. Let our hands be productive for Your Name's sake today.

Discussion Questions

1. Which areas do you find easier to love God with? Which areas do you find difficult to love God with?

2. Let's move the needle together, friends! What area do you need to take ground in today? What idol needs to be removed for God to sit on that throne of your life? Where do you knowingly fall short of all?

3. Who in your life excels in one of these areas of faith where you struggle? Will you reach out and ask them to show you how they do it?
