Central Truth

Out of an endless reservoir of His love, God calls and pursues us, His wandering creation. Even as we hide under the weight and despair of our guilt, shame, and fear, He initiates, reconciles, and restores.

Key Verse | Genesis 3:9

But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

Genesis 3

The Fall

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You 1 3:1 In Hebrew you is plural in verses 15 shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, 2 3:6 Or to give insight she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool 3 3:8 Hebrew wind of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 4 3:9 In Hebrew you is singular in verses 9 and 11 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The LORD God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and dust you shall eat
    all the days of your life.
15  I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring 5 3:15 Hebrew seed; so throughout Genesis and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
    in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to 6 3:16 Or shall be toward (see 4:7) your husband,
    but he shall rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
    in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18  thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19  By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
    and to dust you shall return.”

20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 7 3:20 Eve sounds like the Hebrew for life-giver and resembles the word for living 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

22 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Dive Deeper | Genesis 3

This is an overwhelmingly sad chapter. Sin stains the pristine canvas of the Almighty’s creative handiwork. And who was it that vandalized His masterpiece? It was none other than man and woman. Those created in the very image of the Triune God, full of dignity, purpose, and value (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 139:13-16), fell for the serpent’s lie that the Creator did not have their best interest in mind.

Doubt was created, disobedience followed, and death entered in (Romans 5:12-21).

Indeed, by the time we get to the last verse, the shrapnel of sin is fully embedded into God’s newly formed world. His perfect creation was marred by:

  • Misrepresentation (Genesis 3:1-3)
  • Lies (Genesis 3:4-5)
  • Shame (Genesis 3:7)
  • Hiding (Genesis 3:8)
  • Fear (Genesis 3:10)
  • Blame (Genesis 3:12)
  • Curses (Genesis 3:14 & 17)
  • Fractured relationships (Genesis 3:16)
  • Pain (Genesis 3:16-17)
  • Thorns and thistles (Genesis 3:18)
  • Death (Genesis 3:19)
  • Eviction (Genesis 3:24)

Yet tucked in the middle of the destruction, we see the LORD God do something that should breathe life into the soul of every Christ-follower on The Journey.

Don’t let your familiarity with this passage cause you to gloss over this life-changing phrase! It’s nestled in right after the man and woman, full of guilt, shame, and fear, try to hide themselves from God.

“But the LORD God called . . . .”

Meditate on the implications of these five words. The LORD God came looking for His children while they hid under the weight of their destructive choices. He called. He pursued. He initiated. He wasn't disgusted, angry, or put off. God desired a restoration of the relationship!

Fellow traveler, have you trudged into this new year weary and heavy-laden? Do guilt, shame, or fear beckon you to hide from your Father and from His people? Lift your eyes and be reminded that He has been calling out to His broken, wandering children ever since that awful day in the Garden of Eden. Dive deep into the ocean of His Word and soak in the truth that He loves you and is passionately pursuing you. Bring a humble and contrite heart before Him—confess your brokenness, guilt, and inadequacy. You will find rest, not rejection (Psalm 51:1-19)!

Discussion Questions

1. Read and meditate on some or all the following verses. Take some time to observe and note the ways that God pursues:

  • Genesis 4:3-7
  • Psalm 103:1-22
  • Luke 15:1-32
  • Luke 19:10
  • Romans 5:8
  • Titus 3:3-7

2. Do you believe that God is 100% for you? Are you convinced that He loves you and is not put off by your frailty and weaknesses? If not, why?

3. Read and pray through James 5:13-20. Are you attempting to hide anything from God or His people right now? If so, gather your community group around you—confess and seek prayer so that you might experience healing and restoration.
