Central Truth
God has made the ultimate sacrifice: His Son dying on the cross for our sins, so that we will have everlasting life. There is nothing we can do to change that.
[H]ow much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:14)
1 Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. 2 For a tent 1 9:2 Or tabernacle; also verses 11, 21 was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. 2 9:2 Greek the presentation of the loaves It is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a second section 3 9:3 Greek tent; also verses 6, 8 called the Most Holy Place, 4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5 Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
6 These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, 7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. 8 By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing 9 (which is symbolic for the present age). 4 9:9 Or which is symbolic for the age then present According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, 5 9:11 Some manuscripts good things to come then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify 6 9:13 Or For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our 7 9:14 Some manuscripts your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Okay, I admit it, the first time I read this passage, I had no idea what to write about. All I understood was that there was a tabernacle, with an outer and inner room, and that there were people making sacrifices of animals. But as I kept reading, I started trying to connect this to my own life.
People went through so much to "please" God. They made sacrifices and worshiped from the inside of a tent. The tent had to be kept in perfect condition, everything was in the perfect place, and it became more about the appearance of everything being all right than actual worship going on. They believed that in order for God to show favor on them, they had to be the "flawless" follower of the Law.
God tells us that this is NOT true at all! He has already made the ultimate sacrifice by sending His Son to die on the cross for our sins. This means that, on our own, we will never be free from sin. We are not perfect like God. No matter what we do, we continually say the wrong thing, make mistakes, hurt people's feelings, and never love others enough. His Son died so that we can be free from that mentality.
I struggle with this exact problem. I feel like I need to get the highest grades, have enough friends, be at every church service, and perform at the highest level in order to be loved. I'm so used to the conditional love of man that I forget that God's love is far above that. God has unconditional, planned, perfect, and everlasting love. No matter what I do, He will always love me.
This is one of the most encouraging messages throughout the Bible. I cannot do a single thing to lose God's love for me. He created me in His image, and, in His Son, I am perfect in His eyes.
1. Are you struggling to be the "flawless Christian"? How can you find rest in your walk with Christ?
2. In what areas are you seeking love from those around you?
3. How can you remind yourself daily that God's unconditional love is the only one worth seeking?
