Central Truth

The Lord calls us to leave a legacy for those we are shepherding. We must train them so that they will remember their God even when we are no longer there to remind them.

Key Verse | 2 Peter 1:15

And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. (2 Peter 1:15)

2 Peter 1

Greeting

Simeon 1 1:1 Some manuscripts Simon Peter, a servant 2 1:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Confirm Your Calling and Election

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to 3 1:3 Or by his own glory and excellence, 4 1:3 Or virtue by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, 5 1:5 Or excellence; twice in this verse and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities 6 1:8 Greek these things; also verses 9, 10, 12 are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, 7 1:10 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, 8 1:13 Greek tent; also verse 14 to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, 9 1:17 Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Dive Deeper | 2 Peter 1

I taught kindergarten for five years, and it was such a blast. Along with the fun and excitement, there was a lot of training that took place in our classroom. We learned how to respect adults, interact with friends, and walk in a line down a hallway! The students quickly grasped routines, but the true test of transformation always came when I had a substitute teacher. After being reminded of ALL the things they had learned, some would remain faithful to what they had been taught, but many of the youngsters took that hint of freedom and ran with it.

Peter knew that people tend to behave like kindergartners! He wanted his people to know that he would not be around forever to steer them in the right direction. There would come a time when he would be gone, and it would be imperative for them to continue following Christ on their own. He felt a great responsibility to challenge them repeatedly with truth. He knew that life with Christ was worth pursuing and called them to apply "all diligence" to growing in their faith, morality, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love.

What a two-fold challenge to those of us who are followers of Christ! Is our walk with Christ too dependent on a certain teacher or leader? How would we live if our "teacher" were gone? And what about the people that God has called us to shepherd? Are we constantly reminding our children, community group, and friends of the great importance and benefit of godly living? Are we repeatedly challenging them to mark their lives by diligence, moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love? Will they be able to recall the things we have taught them so that their walk with Christ continues to thrive after we are gone?

May we all follow Peter's example of diligent instruction so that we might leave a legacy for generations to come!

Discussion Questions

1. Who is investing in you? If that person moved away, would you still cling to Christ and live your life according to the Word of God?

2. Do you have any spiritual "children"? Are there people you are investing in right now? Is there anything stopping you from stepping into a discipleship role?

3. What are the specific things mentioned in this passage that we need to be diligent to teach and impart to others?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

October 22-26 (1 Peter 3 – 2 Peter 2)

Read 2 Peter 1:3-11.

• What does verse 3 say about knowing Jesus? What do we receive?
• Does this mean that we can then just sit back and do nothing?

Peter is very quick then to give us what we are to do. Make a list of these things. You should find seven things. For each one, discuss what it means and write out a definition. Then, look up the verses below for each one.

• Moral excellence: Philippians 4:8
• Knowledge: Proverbs 1:7, 9:10
• Self-control: Proverbs 16:32; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
• Perseverance: Romans 5:3-4; James 1:3
• Godliness: Proverbs 13:6; 1 Timothy 4:8
• Brotherly kindness: 1 Peter 1:22, 3:8
• Love: John 3:16, 13:35; 1 Peter 4:8

Discuss how each shows up in your life and which ones you need to put more effort into.

Peter gives all these things as a recipe for living a life that honors God. It is important to not leave any of them out, just as it is important to remember the sugar in the recipe below.

Activity: Go to the myrecipes.com website and get the ingredients for making sugar cookies (http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/sugar-cookies-10000001010479/). While making the sugar cookies, follow the instructions, but do not add the sugar when it says to. Then divide the dough in half. Now add half the required sugar to only one of the dough halves. Continue following the instructions and bake both batches of cookies. How do the ones without the sugar taste? Why did it make such a difference? When following a recipe, it is important to be sure you include all the ingredients.
