Central Truth

God gives us boundaries and leaders for our own good. We test them to our own detriment.

Key Verse | Numbers 34:12

"This will be your land, with its boundaries on every side." (Numbers 34:12, NIV)

Numbers 34

Boundaries of the Land

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the people of Israel, and say to them, When you enter the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan as defined by its borders), your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin alongside Edom, and your southern border shall run from the end of the Salt Sea on the east. And your border shall turn south of the ascent of Akrabbim, and cross to Zin, and its limit shall be south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it shall go on to Hazar-addar, and pass along to Azmon. And the border shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and its limit shall be at the sea.

For the western border, you shall have the Great Sea and its 1 34:6 Syriac; Hebrew lacks its coast. This shall be your western border.

This shall be your northern border: from the Great Sea you shall draw a line to Mount Hor. From Mount Hor you shall draw a line to Lebo-hamath, and the limit of the border shall be at Zedad. Then the border shall extend to Ziphron, and its limit shall be at Hazar-enan. This shall be your northern border.

10 You shall draw a line for your eastern border from Hazar-enan to Shepham. 11 And the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain. And the border shall go down and reach to the shoulder of the Sea of Chinnereth on the east. 12 And the border shall go down to the Jordan, and its limit shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land as defined by its borders all around.”

13 Moses commanded the people of Israel, saying, “This is the land that you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half-tribe. 14 For the tribe of the people of Reuben by fathers' houses and the tribe of the people of Gad by their fathers' houses have received their inheritance, and also the half-tribe of Manasseh. 15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, toward the sunrise.”

List of Tribal Chiefs

16 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 17 “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 You shall take one chief from every tribe to divide the land for inheritance. 19 These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 20 Of the tribe of the people of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22 Of the tribe of the people of Dan a chief, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23 Of the people of Joseph: of the tribe of the people of Manasseh a chief, Hanniel the son of Ephod. 24 And of the tribe of the people of Ephraim a chief, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25 Of the tribe of the people of Zebulun a chief, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. 26 Of the tribe of the people of Issachar a chief, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27 And of the tribe of the people of Asher a chief, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28 Of the tribe of the people of Naphtali a chief, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.” 29 These are the men whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance for the people of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Dive Deeper | Numbers 34

It was in the the earliest parts of my life that I tested every boundary set by God or any authority figure. For me, God seemed to be a cosmic buzzkill, bent on making sure I had no fun and lived a constricted, conflicted, completely boring existence. I wasn't a Christ-follower then and believed the lie that the world had everything I needed to be happy if I just pursued it hard enough. Although not a believer, I was raised in the Christian traditions so I knew the boundaries God had set. However, I had no intention of living in such a small, uninteresting way. I did as I pleased, and I suffered the consequences of my actions. By God's grace I survived even the aggressively stupid things. Sexual immorality and hedonism were my idols.

Over time, I began to see that you really can't live the way "the world" says you should. Relationships failed; professional accolades rang hollow; the superficial things lost their appeal; and my life became more chaotic, sad, and hopeless. I was using the freedom given to me by God to enslave myself to fleeting pleasures outside of God's plan for my life. I didn't realize it was God's plan I was missing, I just knew from the resulting pain and loneliness what didn't work. I can see God was at work in my life then, but I still wasn't a believer.

If you actually layout this section of Numbers on a map and take the total population of the Jews at the time, you will discover that the land set aside for them is several times bigger than they would ever need. God's provisions for me have been no less generous. God's other boundaries in our lives are also just as generous.

Now I look at God's plan as the blessing it is. God gives us these boundaries because He knows us best, and He knows the enemy. Not that I'm perfect and never stumble, but because of God's love and grace, I'm more blessed than I deserve. With God's grace I have become the man I never expected to be: a fully devoted Christ-follower.

Discussion Questions

1. What boundaries do you continue to cross today?

2. What boundaries do you encourage others to test?

3. How has this played out in your life?

4. What would it take for you to admit (confess) these activities are futile, ask for forgiveness, and recommit to living completely inside God's plan for your life?
