Central Truth

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and His Father has given Him all authority in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth. Our proof is His resurrection.

Key Verse | John 2:19

Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." (John 2:19)

John 2:13-25

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, 1 2:20 Or This temple was built forty-six years ago and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

Dive Deeper | John 2:13-25

In this scene at the temple court, I have to wonder what the disciples might have been thinking. They had just come from Cana where Jesus had quietly saved the day by turning the water into wine. No doubt they thought that was cool. A few days later, they are on their way to Jerusalem, enjoying the crowds and looking forward to the Passover celebration. Just when everything seemed to be rolling along smoothly, they go to the temple, and Jesus decides it’s time to clean house and turns the place upside down. The disciples had to be thinking, “Whoa, what’s up with Him? He’s going to get us arrested!”

The Jewish leaders had to be shocked as well. Their question was essentially, “Who do you think you are, coming in here and tossing the place? You need to show us some ID!” They didn’t know Him as the One who has been given all authority and to whom every knee will bow. (Philippians 2:10) In a few years He would back up His claim to rebuild the temple: "For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father." (John 10:17-18)

Like the disciples and the Jewish leaders, I had a problem recognizing and acknowledging Christ’s deity and authority. For a long time I thought I was in control and that I was the ultimate authority in my life. Surrender was not an option. I, too, had set up tables in His temple to conduct my unseemly business. Amazingly, by His grace alone, Christ determined to overturn my tables and show me that He is my loving Lord. Now, I pray daily for submission to His authority for I know Him to be who He claims to be—the Son of God!
