Central Truth
God's provision through His Son, Jesus, ought to be our greatest source of joy.
"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." (Luke 10:20)
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 1 10:21 Or for so it pleased you well 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
I'm sure Emmitt Smith would not be introduced as follows: “Most rushing yards in NFL history, three Super Bowl championships, and MVP of his high school football team!” Why would anyone care to include a junior championship when describing John McEnroe’s tennis accomplishments? While being MVP on a high school football team or even receiving a junior trophy might seem fantastic on our resumes, it really isn’t worth mentioning in these guys' bios.
So what is your greatest accomplishment? In today’s Scripture Jesus is telling his disciples that although they have just had fun doing pretty unbelievable things that probably attracted a lot of attention, nothing compares to the fact that they were “bought at a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:20) They were no longer doomed to eternal hell, but had free access to the throne room of God as His sons and daughters!
Being a parent, verse 21 makes me smile. When my kids are overjoyed by a little accomplishment, I enjoy their celebration, and it's easy to rejoice with them. It's also easy, however, to get caught up in desiring accomplishments that mean very little, rather than what counts for eternity. I can remember being thrilled when my kids prayed and asked Jesus to be their Lord. I can also remember being elated when they were named all-state or won a state championship. I imagine if my kids were not walking with the Lord, the athletic honors would not mean much. Yet, if you saw me on the sidelines of one of their games, you would think that even one bad call from the ref might have eternal consequences!
We live in a crazy and uncertain time both politically and economically. There are many reasons to be stressed out. Today, however, consider how awesome it is that your name is “recorded in heaven.” You are a child of the King and will live with Him forever! If you have not asked Jesus to be your Lord, or don't know what that means, please pursue that today with someone who has. There is nothing that even comes close!
1. What trophy are you pursuing that you think will make you happy?
2. Is your salvation a source of joy to you today?
3. What would others around you say is the thing that thrills you the most?
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What were the disciples excited about in verse 17? They had seen great miracles performed through them.
2. What did Jesus say was even greater to be excited about (verse 20)? The fact that we get to be with Jesus in heaven if we trust in Him is the greatest miracle of all.
3. Have you accepted Jesus’ death on the cross and, therefore, know that your name is registered in heaven?
