Central Truth

God has done more for us than our hearts and minds could ever truly understand, and we are called to respond in a way that is so much more than the half-hearted effort we often give.

Key Verse | Ephesians 4:1–3

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3)

Ephesians 4:1-16

Unity in the Body of Christ

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men.” 1 4:8 The Greek word anthropoi can refer to both men and women

(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 2 4:9 Or the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds 3 4:11 Or pastors and teachers, 4 4:11 Or the shepherd-teachers 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, 5 4:13 Greek to a full-grown man to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Dive Deeper | Ephesians 4:1-16

It struck me as I read and reread this passage that Paul chose to start it with the word Therefore. Webster defines therefore as: 1) for that reason, 2) because of that.

So naturally I wanted to know, because of what? As I went back to read the first three chapters of Ephesians, I realized Paul had just spelled out all that God has done for us and what our true identity is in Him, not because of what we have done, but freely by His grace because He loves us. As Paul begins chapter 4, he is calling us to respond to all that he has just laid out. Paul spent a lot of time spelling out the details of what God has done for us, because when we truly understand the depth of it all, we naturally want to serve and obey Him. I also think Paul wanted to make sure to explain first all that God has already done to make the point clear. You don't "walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called" (verse 1) so that God will love you, but because He already does. He is calling us to respond out of a heart of thanksgiving, not out of a desire to earn our salvation.

So, if living a life worthy of the calling is to be our response to all God has done for us, what does that look like? It looks like our lives being characterized by humility, gentleness, patience, and love. It looks like putting others' needs before our own, thinking of ourselves less, lifting others up, and bearing one another's burdens. It also looks like prioritizing and living out this calling above all else. There are a lot of other "callings" that can consume our time, energy, and resources, but to live a life worthy of the calling we have received means that we need to maximize our resources to achieve the purpose of spreading the gospel and making Jesus more famous. This is such a big calling, but so worth it! How are you doing?

Discussion Questions

1. Do you fully understand all God has done for you and what your identity is in Him?

2. Are you living your life the way you are so that God will love you or because He already does?

3. Are you prioritizing your time and energy in such a way that you are living out God's calling above all else? If not, what are some practical steps you can take to change that?
