Central Truth

Jesus Christ is king and lord of all.

Key Verse | Psalm 110:1

Here is the Lord’s proclamation to my lord:
“Sit down at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool!” (Psalm 110:1)

Psalm 110

Sit at My Right Hand

A Psalm of David.

The LORD says to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The LORD sends forth from Zion
    your mighty scepter.
    Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely
    on the day of your power, 1 110:3 Or on the day you lead your forces
    in holy garments; 2 110:3 Masoretic Text; some Hebrew manuscripts and Jerome on the holy mountains
from the womb of the morning,
    the dew of your youth will be yours. 3 110:3 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
The LORD has sworn
    and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your right hand;
    he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations,
    filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs 4 110:6 Or the head
    over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way;
    therefore he will lift up his head.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 110

Have you ever heard someone say, "I would like to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation"? Usually, it is a past conversation in history that would have been incredible to hear firsthand or a conversation between two people that I am curious to learn how it all played out.

The Bible is full of opportunities to hear conversations that have taken place. This chapter of Scripture gives us the incredible opportunity to hear a conversation between the Almighty Father, Jehovah, and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and God raised Him from the dead. The Father gave His Son supreme authority and complete control of everything.

My wife and I recently had our first child, a precious little boy named Colton. I think I can handle pretty much anything thrown at me these days. Our first week was filled with many emotions. At times I was  scared to death; I was not expecting the many thoughts that ran through my head. I thought about the fact that I hold a little boy in my hands who is now my responsibility. I have gotten into wrong thinking that I can protect this child from all harm at all times. While it is true that I am responsible for Colton and need to provide for and protect him, there is an overwhelming truth that I will not always be able to protect him his whole life. There are things that are out of my control. I feel as helpless as Colton at times.

In the midst of this helpless feeling, I find comfort in this passage and several others like it that proclaim the sovereignty of Jesus and that He is on His throne. I have begun to see and trust that Colton is more the Lord's than he will ever be mine.

Discussion Questions

1. Even in the midst of being obedient, are there areas in your life that you think you have under control? How much control do you really have?

2. Are there areas in your life in which you are leaning on your own understanding and not acknowledging the Lord?

3. What are some verses that bring you comfort when life seems overwhelming? Have you placed them in your heart?
