Central Truth
Election is God's business. Telling His story is my business.
[E]ven us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? (Romans 9:24)
19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,
“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’
and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”
26
“And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel 1 9:27 Or children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29 And as Isaiah predicted,
“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
we would have been like Sodom
and become like Gomorrah.”
30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness 2 9:31 Greek a law of righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 as it is written,
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
There are some questions you don't ask. You don't ask a woman if her hair is dyed or her age (much less her weight). You don't ask a guy how long he was in the bathroom.
In the same vein, there are theological areas where we should tread lightly. One of these areas is the issue of God's choosing. It's a hard subject that hurts feelings simply by virtue of the subject matter, because at the end of the day, we all want to be chosen. We all want to be picked for the team.
On this topic of election (God's choosing), some will ask, "Is God unjust for choosing one person and not another?" We've all heard that no questions are stupid. But in this passage, Paul says in effect, questions are good . . . except the questions we use to jockey for the God position.
In the paragraphs immediately preceding this passage, Paul explained God's sovereignty in election. This is a difficult concept for everyone, no question about it. No one has it entirely figured out, and the appropriate response is to admit that. The exactly wrong response is to complain, "Hey, isn't God unjust for choosing one and not someone else?" This passage isn't about God not choosing me; it's about God choosing . . . anyone . . . at all. Period. He chooses. And as hard as it may be, we are called to rejoice over that simple fact: He chooses us. Grace overwhelms!
At the end of the day, worrying about what God is doing with whom is not our prerogative. Election (in this sense) is not our business. But (also according to Paul) evangelism is our business. (See 2 Timothy 4:1-2) We are chosen by God, and our response is to share His love and hope, not to question His methods.
1. Read Job 38-40. What parallels can you draw between God's communication with Job and Paul's admonition in this Romans 9 passage?
2. Election is a difficult conversation. What other passages in Scripture convey the message that God wants all men to be saved (e.g., 1 Timothy 2:4)?
3. What does verse 23 in this passage tell us about why God chooses us?
