Central Truth
Our way leads to death—death of character, our legacy, and our security. It leads to ruin and sin (verses 5, 7, 9, 14, 16). Let’s choose God’s way for a life that delivers from death, producing a clear conscience, an honorable memorial, and blessing (verses 2, 6, 7, 9).
The wage of the righteous leads to life,
the gain of the wicked to sin.
(Proverbs 10:16)
1 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
2
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
but righteousness delivers from death.
3
The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4
A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5
He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.
6
Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Many of the Proverbs are sticky sayings that compare and contrast ways of doing life.
Proverbs 10:1-17 compares and contrasts:
Righteousness vs. wickedness (verses 2, 3, 6, 7, 11, 16)
Wisdom vs. foolishness (verses 1, 8, 13, 14)
Love vs. hate (verse 12)
Life vs. sin (verse 17)
After moving to Dallas as newlyweds, we were challenged by living in a big city, new jobs, and the closest family and/or friends being seven hours away. We were Christians, but that did not protect us from difficulties. When I look back at our first months of marriage, we were blazing a course set on destruction. Although we were professing Christ-followers, we were living degenerate lives. Not prioritizing Christ in the day-to-day, our lives ultimately lacked God-oriented purpose. Jerry Bridges in Respectable Sins defines ungodliness as, “living one’s everyday life with little or no thought of God, or of God’s will, or of God’s glory, or of one’s dependence on God.”
When we became more fully and consistently invested with the believers around us, devoting our lives daily to God’s Word and following God’s Spirit, we started living life with direction, intentionality, and on purpose for Christ. The Lord led us to pursue righteousness, wisdom, and love. As a result, life followed. In contrast, when my speech and actions lacked thought, purpose, and intentionality, it led to wickedness, foolishness, hate, and sin.
Christ promises those who follow Him a full, bursting-forth and all-in life (John 10:10). You will have a continuous song in your heart (Ephesians 5:19). Jesus promises a life that will be complete with righteousness, wisdom, and love. He promises peace even though trouble may abound (John 16:33).
Let’s live our lives on purpose, with intentionality and a clear direction toward Christ. Let our faith be displayed through our works (James 2:18). Let our righteous light be a beacon of Christ’s goodness in us (Matthew 5:16)! People need to see and hear Christ, and they need to see and hear Him from you! People of God, let’s do this!
1. Verse 16 talks about righteous wages leading to life and wicked gain to sin. Wages and gains are working terms, so what are you working toward? What does that look like in your daily happenings?
2. It does not matter where you start, but how you finish! What choices will you make today to pursue righteousness, wisdom, love, and life?
3. Can you identify those things that are bringing about wickedness, foolishness, hate, and sin in your life? What’s something you can do today to change course? Can you ask trusted friends to point out your blind spots?
4. The only way to expel darkness is to shine light on it. What are some areas in your life that need Jesus’ light and perspective to shine through? What does God’s Word say about these areas of your life?
