Central Truth

We need to recall and recount the faithfulness of God.

Key Verse | Psalm 78:11

They forgot what He had done,
the amazing things He had shown them.
(Psalm 78:11)

Psalm 78:1-20

Tell the Coming Generation

A Maskil 1 78:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of Asaph.

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
    but keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers,
    a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The Ephraimites, armed with 2 78:9 Hebrew armed and shooting the bow,
turned back on the day of battle.
10  They did not keep God's covenant,
but refused to walk according to his law.
11  They forgot his works
and the wonders that he had shown them.
12  In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders
in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
13  He divided the sea and let them pass through it,
and made the waters stand like a heap.
14  In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
and all the night with a fiery light.
15  He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16  He made streams come out of the rock
and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17  Yet they sinned still more against him,
rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
18  They tested God in their heart
by demanding the food they craved.
19  They spoke against God, saying,
“Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
20  He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
or provide meat for his people?”

Dive Deeper | Psalm 78:1-20

If you are anything like me, you have difficulty understanding the lack of faith that infected the Jewish people in the Old Testament in spite of the physical presence of God. You might be thinking to yourself, "How can they turn their backs on God after the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the manna from Heaven, the water from the rocks, and the countless other miracles that seem so less prevalent today? Surely, I would have been faithful!"

First, don't call me Shirley. Second, fast forward to today, and again if you are anything like me, you see how easily the tasks of the day crowd your heart and mind, causing you to put everything you know about God on the back burner. Since this psalm was written, we also have an additional 2,000 plus years of faithfulness God has given us. This time frame includes the biggest act of all . . . the payment of our debt through the death of Jesus and the promise of eternal victory through His resurrection.

So, if we have this additional evidence and still fall short, who are we to judge God's chosen people? Asaph, the author of this psalm, says that the Jewish people who struggled with their faithfulness provide an example to the rest of us. Living the way we are supposed to live takes strong community and communication. Asaph is calling on the adults to teach the next generations everything God has done to bring His people to Him and to protect them.

I think his point is that if you are constantly being reminded of the Omniness (OK, it's not a word, but work with me) of God by friends and family, you will be better positioned to maintain your faith on a daily basis. We also need to encourage others in the same way we are encouraged and reminded of God's faithfulness. With community surrounding us and reminding us of God's character, we can learn from Israel and remember to keep our relationship with God at the forefront.

Discussion Questions

1. How do you ensure that you are constantly reminded of God's goodness?

2. Are you teaching future generations about God and His goodness?

3. Are you in community with folks who will help keep you on point with where you want to be?
