Central Truth
We all trust in someone or something; a political leader or preacher, a spouse or a child, a career, money, or our very own self that we hope will save us. But trust this: All the king's horses and all the king's men can't save you, only Jesus can!
Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.
(Psalm 146:3)
1
Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!
2
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
3
Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
4
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.
5
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD his God,
6
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
7
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets the prisoners free;
8
the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.
The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;
the LORD loves the righteous.
9
The LORD watches over the sojourners;
he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
10
The LORD will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the LORD!
Martin Luther King, Ronald Reagan, Pope Frances, Billy Graham, Dak Prescott (hard to type for this Viking fan), your spouse, YOURSELF?! In whom do you put your trust? Where does your future joy and hope find its basis? What do all of these names have in common? All of these people have died or will die. Acts 4:12 says, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name [Jesus] under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." These are bold words that elicit the world's claims of intolerance and exclusivity. Yet, every other "way to God" expressed by all other religions asserts acclaim to exclusivity. AND THEIR EARTHLY REPRESENTATIVE NEVER CLAIMED TO BE GOD AND IS DEAD.
Only Jesus, the Christ from Nazareth, claimed to be God and to have risen from the dead. This makes Jesus one of three things according to C.S. Lewis: a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord of all. And He knocks on your door and lets you decide for yourself whether to answer His call, "Come to me . . . ."
I trusted in Jesus in ninth grade, or so I thought. The truth is, my trust was in myself and all the things of this world. I became a modern-day Pharisee—a cup that was beautiful and clean on the outside (all my religious performance), but full of greed and self-indulgence on the inside. Galatians 6:7-8 says, "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life." I broke in 2008. But unlike Humpty Dumpty, when I put all my trust in Jesus, I was put back together again and restored. For the rest of the story, HERE's a link to our testimony.
1. Matthew 6:21 says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Could your treasure be something you trust in? Why is it so important to understand what your treasure is?
2. As Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" I really did think my trust was in Jesus before my world fell apart and I broke. How can you know if your trust is in someone or something other than Jesus Christ?
3. If you were put on trial for having your trust in Jesus Christ, would you be found guilty by a jury of your peers?
4. What do your checkbook, credit card, calendar, and thoughts reveal about what you trust in? Ask those who know you best (community) where they feel your trust lies.
