Central Truth

Faithful historians are diligent to compile and communicate what has been "accomplished among us."

Key Verse | Luke 1:1

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us . . .

Luke 1:1

Dedication to Theophilus

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us,

George Santayana is given credit for first saying, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The truth of this statement emphasizes the essential job of the faithful observer of history. It is imperative that they record and testify to what they see and know to be true so others can be spared the darkness that accompanies ignorance.

The role of historian is constantly emphasized in Scripture.

"One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. . . . They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. . . . They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. . . . My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. (Psalm 145:4, 6, 11-12, 21)

The job of generational historian is especially assigned to parents, as they are admonished to teach their children about the great deeds and faithfulness of God in ages past.

Deuteronomy 4:8-9 says, "And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children."

Finally, it is the job of all faithful disciples to teach others what they have heard from faithful "historians" who passed truth on to them.

As Paul commands in 2 Timothy 2:2, "[A]nd what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."
