Central Truth

We are called to take action—to live a life fully committed to God and the work He has entrusted to us.

Romans 13

Submission to the Authorities

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Dive Deeper | Romans 13

I love decision points. You know, those moments when the research has been done, the options have been evaluated, and the time has come to make the choice. Maybe it's what to eat for dinner: pizza or burgers. Where to go for summer vacation: beach or mountains. Relax on the sofa or go for that run I’ve been talking about.

There is a time for each decision point when you have to decide what you are going to do and then do it. At that point you fully commit to your decision, and you move forward. I’ve had the opportunity to climb some beautiful mountains, and on each of those climbs I have reached a point where the long walk turns into a committed effort. It is at that point that you have to decide: do I want to reach the summit or be content with the effort and go back down? If you choose to push on for the summit, you have to fully commit. So you strap on your harness, tighten your boots, rope in with the other climbers, and push onward.

We see a similar decision point in Romans 13. Paul has discussed how we as followers of Christ should submit to authorities (Romans 13:1-7) and how we should love our neighbors (Romans 13:8-10). Now we get to the decision point in Romans 13:11-14. It is a decision point, a choice. Commit and take action, or make the conscious decision to do nothing. Paul is giving us a call to action.

Our time on earth is limited (Psalm 144:4), and how we choose to live out that time speaks to our character and is a reflection to others of our faith. God has given each of us time to do the work He has set for us: love our neighbors, draw closer to Him, and share His love and story of grace with those around us.

Now is the time! Put on your harness, tighten your boots, and rope up with those around you. Then commit and push on to the summit . . . I’ll see you up there!

This month's memory verse

18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

– Romans 12:18
