Central Truth

If you believe in the saving grace of Jesus, then you are adopted by the perfect Father, and your name no longer reflects the sin that once defined you. You are now called "forgiven" and "chosen" by the true God who loves you more than your earthly father ever could.

Romans 9:4–5

They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

Many people know this about me through my testimony on the website for re:generation, Watermark's recovery ministry. I am adopted. My mother divorced my birth father after suffering physical abuse. Then she allowed my stepfather to adopt me when I was 7. My entire name was changed. I had a new identity. I had a chance to have a new life with a new dad who would love me, care for me, and call me his own. But what did I do instead? I rejected him. I grew bitter inside toward him and thought that my ways were better than his. I could do life on my own without his leadership and without his perceived knowledge of the world. I even went so far as to cut off all ties and communication with him in my late 30s/early 40s, only to reconcile with him two months before God took him home.

In this passage, Paul speaks about how his fellow Israelite brothers were given the gift of adoption from the almighty God and have favor from the only Father who could give them eternal life. Yet what did they do? They rejected Him and His Son Jesus Christ, who was from their race, was crucified, and was raised from the dead to give eternal life to all who believe in Him. They turned away from the very Father who adopted them and called them His own. Thankfully, we have a Father in heaven who loves us so very much that He forgives us when we turn away from Him and toward our selfish sinful natures that tell us we can do this life on our own terms. I have tried that life. It did not work out so well for me. I came to the end of myself and turned toward the only true God who loved me, gave me hope for a future, and forgave me for everything I had done that was leading me straight down a path toward eternal death.

He adopted me. He embraced me. He forgave me. He called me His own.

This month's memory verse

24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

– Romans 7:24–25

Discussion Questions

1. Are you stuck in patterns of depravity that are filling a God-sized hole in your life and keeping you from a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ and your Heavenly Father? If so, come hang out with us at re:generation, where the broken in life have received healing from a loving God who doesn’t just want us to have eternal life. He wants us to have an abundant life in Christ while we are visitors on this earth (John 10:10).

2. Have you ever thought about adopting a child who is labeled as unwanted by earthly parents, either before the child's entry into the world or after, and giving that child the chance to have a life that is full of the joy and peace that can only be experienced in a walk with Christ in a loving home? Please visit these pages on the Watermark website dedicated to helping you learn more about the adoption process: watermark.org/life and watermark.org/tapestry.

3. What are you doing today to support your daily walk with Jesus? God calls us to an abundant life in Christ and wants us to abide in Him daily through reading and meditating on His Word (Joshua 1:8), praying continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and inscribing His Word on our hearts (Psalm 119:11). These spiritual disciplines, along with others, allow us to be as close to the Father as we can before we stand before Him one day in heaven and are glorified forever in His kingdom.
