Central Truth

Anyone and everyone who has trusted in Christ as their personal Savior is a part of God's family.

Key Verse | Galatians 3:26, 28

[F]or in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. . . . There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26, 28)

Galatians 3:15–29

The Law and the Promise

15 To give a human example, brothers: 1 3:15 Or brothers and sisters even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave 2 3:28 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

Dive Deeper | Galatians 3:15–29

Equality is something that we hear repeated on the news. Some people in our culture see it as a necessity. In reality, in Christ alone is there equality. Paul emphasizes the concept of equality as he explains why, in the matter of salvation, all people are seen by God as equal. Everyone who has faith in Christ is welcomed into God's family. He shows no prejudice. This was a foreign concept to some Jewish people in biblical times.

With salvation, what matters is that we have put our faith in Christ Jesus. Within the body of Christ we all have the same relationship to God. All are of equal value. No group or individual is at a disadvantage or considered to be inferior in the sight of God. He shows no favoritism or distinction between nationality, status in life, or sexes. Ethnicity, economic standing, male or female, does not matter to God. We're all considered to be one in Christ Jesus.

I have the privilege to travel regularly to a foreign country where family members live. When in that country, we worship in a church where the citizens of that nation are not allowed to attend. It amazes me and encourages me each year as I meet Christ followers from all over the world who come together to worship. Our backgrounds are very different, our education is very different, our worship styles are different, our spoken languages are not the same, our skin colors and apparel are all different. However, we are all unified and share the same heart need to worship together as one family -- God's family. I'm reminded that this is what heaven will be like!

Discussion Questions

1. Do you find yourself living more under the principles of God's equality or under prejudice? What specific steps can you take to live under the principles of His equality?

2. What characteristics do you see in those who live in unity as compared to those who live in disunity?

3. What does it mean to be "one in Christ Jesus"?
