Central Truth

Truth matters! Paul encourages us all to battle for truth and work to ensure that all we believe, say, and do conforms to His truth.

Key Verse | 2 Corinthians 10:3–5

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

2 Corinthians 10

Paul Defends His Ministry

I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

Look at what is before your eyes. If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as he is Christ's, so also are we. For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

Dive Deeper | 2 Corinthians 10

Verses 3-5 seem out of place in this chapter. Paul is defending his authority to the Corinthians as there are some among them who are contesting what Paul is writing to them about. In verse 13, he reminds them that he doesn't boast in himself, but in what God has apportioned to him. He also reminds them of what he has heard, which is that Paul's writings are weighty and strong, but his appearance is unimpressive and his speech contemptible. So he reminds them that though he walks in the flesh (which is unimpressive), that's not where the battle is. His weapons are DIVINELY powerful for destroying fortresses and speculations raised up against the knowledge of God. These weapons come from God, not from Paul's appearance or speech patterns.

If Paul's speech was contemptible in person, what's my excuse? If I'm relying on God, what do I have to fear in confronting ideas raised up against the knowledge of God? I have written and spoken across the globe, defending the truth that there is abundant evidence of a Creator God. I am shy and fearful by nature, but if the truth I speak of is His truth, fear can be left behind.

Taking every thought captive means each of us needs to bring all our thoughts and ideas to Him and see if they stand up to His truth. When they do, that's what we talk about with others and before others. I study, and I prepare, but ultimately when I open my mouth, I pray that what is from Him is all that people remember and reflect on. That's all that Paul is saying of himself. "Forget about my unimpressive appearance and my contemptible speech. Listen to what God has given me to say and measure it by the understanding provided through His Word and His Spirit."

We should go and do likewise.

Discussion Questions

1. What other ideas in the culture need to be addressed and taken captive and made obedient to Christ?

2. What one idea or thought in your own life needs to be taken captive and made obedient to Christ?

3. Surveys show repeatedly that the majority of those who may claim to be "born again" are far more captive to the ideas of the world than to Christ. If "1" is captive to the world and "10" is completely captive to Christ, where would you place yourself? I dare you to ask a close friend to rank you on that scale!

4. Now what can you change today to intentionally move toward a 10?!
